There were surprisingly few (i.e. a normal amount for a Saturday) people at the grocery store today, and the milk and bread were fully stocked. I think we got there after the panicked masses and the restocking trucks both. (And before whatever’s left of the storm really hits tonight.)

This is a brilliant thread. While there was a lot of violence in the Middle Ages, it is crucial to acknowledge that our contemporary attitudes - in their myriad varieties - are all born out of our own historical context. The abhorrent ones are not relict medieval sentiments, but equally modern.

We had put her down by the small/arthritis cat litter box to see if she wanted to potty and instead she went over to the water fountain and has been taking small drinks for about five minutes.

Morning Little Bit report: temperature within acceptable range, determined to walk around the downstairs, absolutely devoured her breakfast after meds. Walk not significantly steadier from yesterday, but still very determined and more wobbly than unable to get around.

There are times and places around DC I would expect to see a lot of soldiers, but any given Friday definitely isn’t it. American holidays. The occasional hurricane or blizzard like the one that had people ski-walking down Connecticut Avenue. Not a random weekday night.

She’s still walking around and has now eaten a little bit of food! Without hesitation, even. Just a little bit, and then she tried to jump down from the couch like she used to. Because she’s been flinging herself at couch and loveseat like she can get around fine all day. 😂

Cats, boy, I dunno. OH! I meant to thank you the other day. We brought one of our cats home from the specialist vet after a stroke, they told us to check her temp every 3 hours, and I brought out the ear thermometer you'd (I think?) recommended a while back. It was highly approved by vet and cat.

20? 25 ft living room? I have a diagram around here somewhere that an uncle made but it's been a long week and a longer past 24 hours and a bitch is tired. The point being, though, her walk is unsteady but she's capable of sustaining it, with purpose. Even almost climbed onto the loveseat.

A Statement on Copyright Retention Instead of "Work-for-Hire" Cover Illustrations at MRM

We previously commissioned illustrators to create covers as work-for-hire when they were asked to adapt authors' original stories for elements such as cover art.

This will be changing.

The rights granted to MRM by authors are limited, and therefore we can't protect the intellectual property and rights of the original author of the story, if we at the same time grant the authors' rights to the illustrator so that the illustrator can then retain an adaptation copyright. We don't acquire rights from authors that allow us to grant illustrators broad unencumbered use of the worlds, characters, and other elements created by the author.

We're planning to pause cover contracts based on specific stories for the foreseeable future while we figure out the best way forward with those kinds of commissions.

We prefer a process that will both feel fair to illustrators and protect the story authors' copyright.

To that end, we can license existing art or license new original art for our covers (not based on a story) with contracts for illustrators where the artist clearly retains the copyright in the underlying image, since there are no underlying rights owned by authors of the stories that are a part of these kinds of original works.

Regarding retention of "moral rights" in illustrations: our licensing agreements for original art and original fiction use language prepared by an international IP attorney based on notes we received from SFWA's contracts committee. These kinds of agreements no longer include a waiver of moral rights.

We always appreciate when contributors to the magazines express their concerns.

As one of my aunts is fond of reminding me, there was a period in my childhood when I went through a book with a pencil and “fixed” it. (Removed the swears, which is HILARIOUS because I grew up to be a very foul mouthed adult.) Don’t remember ever wanting to write to the author, though.

If she had to have a major medical event, I'm happy with this one! She keeps trying to lunge off our laps and walk to various of her usual hangout places and we keep not letting her because they're high up hangout places and she can only get about four steps before flopping over. Silly baby.
