I have missed my cats so much, but this vacation has been utterly amazing. I needed this break from real life badly. Pompeii was hauntingly beautiful, and so much less crowded than the Colosseum in Rome. (The rain probably helped, there.)

Chloe started to stir, little movements that had her pressing even closer to him for a moment. He was already smiling when she opened her eyes. They settled on his face, and then she smiled, too. “Hi.”

“Good morning again, love.” He kissed the top of her head.

Her eyes shone at that. “Did you get more sleep? What time is it?”

“Yes, and just past ten.”

“Trixie isn’t up yet?”

“Not that I heard.”

“Mmm. I should go check on her, make breakfast…”

“For me as well, yes? Since I do believe you threatened to pamper me all day.”

Her smile only grew. “Yes. For you, too.”

She started to get up, which left Lucifer torn, because he didn’t want her to. He would have been fine with the two of them staying in bed like that all day, whether it meant getting breakfast or not. He had to resist the urge to pull her back down, missing her warmth the moment she moved away from him. If not for Trixie, he might have insisted on another hour under the covers together.

“What do you want to eat?” she asked, running her hand over her hair to smooth it out. “Anything in particular?”

“Whatever you’d like is fine. Just make it extra special for me.” He beamed at her, lounging languidly back to emphasize how much he was willing to be taken care of today.

“You know, that’s not as specific a request as you might think. Deciding to burn your toast or add a bucket of salt to your eggs would also count as making it special.”

He just grinned lazily up at her. “I don’t think you’ll do anything like that, since you love me now.”

Chloe snorted. “Yeah, that doesn’t mean never doing anything to annoy you. Since you’re new to the concept, let me be the first to tell you that people in love intentionally annoy each other sometimes. You should know, really. You’ve already been accomplished at doing both whether you realized it or not.”

He laughed. “Annoy you, maybe, but ruin perfectly good eggs for no reason? Now that, I’d never do.”

A ringing started up in Lucifer’s ears as he strode down the path, hardly seeing it, driven entirely by a need to move. Walk. Run. Fly. Phantom muscles pulled at his back, trying to call on wings he no longer had. The burst of divinity he’d dispelled was only making it worse.

Drive. He was halfway to the front of the resort before he realized he was aiming for the valet and his Corvette, desperate for the feel of a road disappearing at speed under his tires and the heady rush of wind in his face.

He had to get away. Had to put distance between him and Chloe and the nightmare unfolding in that room.

Why did it have to happen now? That blasted divinity he hadn’t experienced in eons, ruining the one truly good thing he’d managed to find in all his life, just when he’d heard those beautiful words that changed everything. I want you.

Somehow, incredibly, Chloe had really told him she wanted to be with him, had kissed him back just as eagerly as he’d kissed her, had wanted to sleep with him and be together after. Everything he’d been so sure he’d never get, things he’d never known to want until now.

Minutes. It had lasted only minutes before it was all torn away.

That was what he got for thinking he could ever be that happy.

“Can I help you, sir—?”

“Keys,” he snapped, the sound abruptly pulling him back to his surroundings. He was in the reception area, the valet looking startled. His shirt was still untucked and unbuttoned. “Now.”

“Can I get your name?”

He couldn’t even say it. He hated that name right now.

“Morningstar,” someone else said for him. He glanced over and saw Mandi, the person who’d first shown them to their suite. “Are you okay?”

“Just give me the keys. I’ll get it myself.”

The valet fumbled to hand them over.

The moment he’d realized everything had fallen apart kept replaying in his head as he went to find his car.

She paced back and forth in the hospital parking lot, glancing at the doors with every turn, occasionally stopping to glare at a random window on the third floor. She had no idea which one was Chloe’s, but it was one of them, so she took the chances and hoped she got it right eventually. None of this would be happening right now if not for her.

Even right this second, Lucifer could be sending himself to hell for her. Dying—for her. He could be giving up everything to save one measly human life, more than that human could ever hope to understand. He wasn’t risking just his life—he was risking being trapped in hell permanently. Nothing she said would convince him it wasn’t worth it, and she couldn’t stand to watch him do it, let alone help.

But as it turned out, waiting around somewhere else while knowing he was going through with it anyway was even worse. She’d come back here without them knowing, unable to help herself, and now that he was somewhere in that building enacting such a horrible plan…

She couldn’t stand by and do nothing, either. If there was anything she could do to make sure he survived, she would do it.

So she went to go find him. The room right below Chloe’s, as he’d said.

She paused just outside the door as she heard a flat, incessant tone coming from the room. And then Maze saying, “This isn’t right. Something’s wrong in hell.”

“What?” The therapist.

“He’s stuck. Trapped in one of those cells. That’s why we can’t revive him.”

A flash of dread stuck her. Too late—she was too late. Lucifer was already dead, already back in hell, and now he was stuck—he wasn’t coming back. His plan was going to fail.

“Okay, so then what do we have to do to bust him out?”

“Someone needs to go down there and pull him out. I’d go, but… I can’t.”

No, Maze couldn’t follow. She listened as the doctor offered to do it instead, as if she had the slightest chance of being able to navigate hell as a human.

For a long time, Lucifer drifted through nothing. A heavy weight was pressed against him, smothering his thoughts, turning any feelings that might have been positive into a sense of dread. It was always like that at some point. Sometimes it lasted only a few moments, sometimes days or years. Hell getting to him in moments of weakness.

He couldn’t open his eyes, but it didn’t really make a difference, did it? He was stuck here. Trapped. Fighting for merely a few precious hours of fresh air, joy, life. And in between…

There was only this.

It always came back to this oppressive darkness. His future endlessly stretching on, with no hope that the darkness would crack. Hell never did. No matter how many times he tried to slip away, it always caught him again.

Eventually the fog lifted some, enough that he gradually realized he might have to actually deal with the world again. The part of him that always kept struggling for freedom was dragging him back into the light despite the futility of it all. He couldn’t help himself; no matter how pointless it was, he tried anyway.

Time to do it again, then. He would claw his way out of hell for another burst of life, for however long it might last. Maybe this would be the time he finally put his foot down…

There was a very important reason to fight through it this time. He couldn’t quite think what, but he felt it—and that helped pulled him on more than anything had in the past. He needed to wake up, even if it was hard.

So he did.

He was so sure he would open his eyes to hell that he couldn’t make sense of what he was seeing at first. Muted yellow lights, pale walls, blooms of color everywhere, a child slumped over the end of a bed. His bed, he realized. And next to him was—

“Chloe.” His voice was thick, sluggish. It matched the way the rest of him felt. But as the seconds slipped by, that heavy, oppressive sense of hell slowly faded away. He wasn’t there—he hadn’t gone back.

They left Dan frowning after them and crossed the remaining distance to the lieutenant’s office. Lucifer opened the door and strode right in without waiting for any sort of invitation, Chloe following just behind. She shut the door.

Cain just watched them, as stoic as ever. It was no wonder he was so stone-faced all the time; he favored rocks, and he’d had millennia to practice indifference. But Lucifer knew now that he was anything but. “Can I help you?” he said, eyes going from him to Chloe.

Lucifer went to one of the chairs placed before the desk and gripped the back, making a show of looking around the office. He’d never been in here before with Cain as its occupant. It was just as dull as the rest of his facade; perfectly boring and organized bookshelves, the desk neat and respectable, every lightbulb and filing cabinet completely average and unremarkable. There wasn’t a single personalized touch in the entire room. Was that part of hiding in plain sight, too, or was the first murderer just completely lacking in any sort of interesting personality?

“So this is what you’ve been doing with your endless existence lately,” Lucifer said. “Masquerading as a tough, weathered, by-the-books cop—and one who’s holed up in an office all day at that. Seems like the most boring option to me, to be perfectly honest. If you need tips on how to enjoy immortality, I’d be happy to help, Cain.”

For another beat, his expression remained impassive, not a single flicker of surprise showing. And then he leaned back, something in the air shifting. He wasn’t going to deny it—a pity. Lucifer had almost been looking forward to that verbal sparring match. “So you finally figured it out,” Cain said. “Took you long enough.”
