Also feeling pretty good about the default toolbar when you're not connected or the server does not have a banner. Had a bit of fun with this. Still using full-color icons which is a bit un-macOS these days, but I'm holding on for some reason. I kinda like my Transfers icon (the bendy arrows).

Markdown is a bit of a game changer for Hotline (which is primarily text based for messages, chat, and news). Now users can add some formatting, style, and images to their communications.

Server themes are generated from server banner images and give each server its own look, helping each server feel like a unique space. Being able to preview the directory tree of old toast disk images or zip files means you can see what's in an archive before downloading it. Handy! :)

OK how about a religion based around an AI (sorry, SI) model whose followers fund the model with donations to the church tax free. Is this a thing yet? 😅

If I read a sci-fi story about AI replacing humans and the creator’s name was “Altman” my eyes would roll out of my ears. “Yes yes, alternative man, I get it, ughhh.” 🥴

Someone go back and tell the great 20th century sci-fi authors that they were unfortunately correct, but only because their writings fueled the imaginations of the nerds who made it all a reality.

I just love how they stapled these over a seemingly fun wall mural? The owners must have been stolen from so many times to feel the need to do this. Reads of desperation… or paranoia. Not sure which.

You can feel it coming. Headsets, glasses, wearables. All interfaces to AI which you’ll use to work, socialize, create, think. They’ll practically give you a computer someday soon, for free, because you’ll pay for it in tokens the rest of your life.

Greatest Hits from Planet Blip collects music from Blippo+, the off-cable television simulator Panic published last year. The label dates it 16 October.
killscreen.com
YACHT is pressing its alien TV hits to double vinyl
The score to _Blippo+_ is getting a double LP. Hologram Opera announced _Greatest Hits from Planet Blip_ for 16 October—the label says there were simply too many hits for one record. Har har har. So, this is not a soundtrack album in the _usual_ sense, where a composer's cues get lifted off a finished film. That's because _Blippo+_ is an off-cable television simulator. It's a delightful experience that takes you through an alien planet's channel guide, mixing soaps, talk shows, weather, and news. So the music isn't an underscore in a traditional sense—it's themes for shows that don't actually exist, loopable bops from an EPG, menu music, all the idents, and bangers from an alien airwave. _Blippo+_ is not simply a YACHT game. The band—Jona Bechtolt, Claire L. Evans and Rob Kieswetter—built the game as a love letter to the production culture of Los Angeles with Jennifer Juniper Stratford's Telefantasy Studios. Kieswetter and Bechtolt wrote the score. It reached Playdate in May 2025 and Steam and Switch that September, and 137 tracks of it have been on Bandcamp since. e. Killscreen has been at this particular intersection a while—whether TiVo (how quaint!) turned television into a game in 2012, the 1997 "television for gamers" in 2014. What is different is that nobody here is adapting television. They built a channel, staffed it with clones and quizmasters, wrote its music, and are now releasing the station's back catalog as though it toured. Programming on Planet Blip, plus the Femtofax videotext forums. Images via the Blippo+ press kit. A band building a television station and scoring every fake show on it is exactly the crossing Killscreen was made to cover. The free newsletter carries the rest of them. Get the newsletter

You Can Now Try Apple's Unreleased Copland OS in Your Browser
In the mid–1990s, Apple worked on an operating system called Copland, which was announced but never commercially released because of project management issues and feature creep. Parts of Copland were eventually included in Mac OS 7.6 and Mac OS 8, but it was so problematic as a whole that Apple nixed it before it was finished. Michael Steil, who works to reverse engineer vintage hardware and software, was recently able to get Copland running in emulation. He modified the open-source Power Mac emulator DingusPPC, and he said it took 11 patches to get Copland up and running. He has a browser version of Copland you can try on his website, and shared the patches needed to boot Copland. During Copland's development, Apple released three beta versions. The last beta was D11E4, which is what Steil got to work. He said Copland is "notoriously hard to run on real hardware," and wasn't previously available in emulation. After Apple canceled Copland in August 1996, it looked outside the company for a new operating system. That led to the purchase of NeXT in 1997 and the return of Steve Jobs. NeXTSTEP, NeXT's operating system, was the precursor to Mac OS X. Ooooo, on my list now, thanks! There’s also Sid Meier’s memoir I’ve been meaning to check out. Not sure if it’s any good and perhaps less exciting, but still. :)

In Lord of the Rings they never show the orcs working through problems. But somebody had to coordinate these massive projects. How did they build those gates? Surely there was an orc architect, maybe a structural engineer, mathematics, which implies there is some school with orc teachers? Anyway.

I love how small institutions like elementary schools now have these wildly stylized AI graphics. Instead of the simple staff-made, clipart, kid-drawn-and-scanned graphics before, now it's: library bookmark? AI GRAPHIC! Newsletter? AI GRAPHIC! Email footer? Everything has an insane logo now. 🤷‍♂️

Was thinking about adding Live Photos support to this project I’m working on and my sister said “Noooooo! Live Photos are like autocorrect but for photos” and I don’t fully get the analogy but I also can’t stop thinking about it. 😅

Wait, they sing the Happy Birthday song to the Pope (in Latin too, I think)? I would have imagined a special ceremony or sacred text they would read, but no, it's the same damn song we all sing?

Maybe video games, like other art forms, just hit differently than, say, a trackpad or Numbers. 😂 I feel like the iPod was perhaps one of the few devices Apple made that connected with people at another level. Maybe! Do I even have a question here? The rambling thoughts of an old man.

Do you think Nintendo has cranked up their nostalgia game over the past few years with remakes? I watched people who grew up on Ocarina with tears streaming during that Zelda Direct. Apple dabbles in it from time to time but generally seems to avoid it. I wish they’d swim in it once in a while.

I never played Ocarina of Time. It just landed at the end of high school for me, had no money, then I started working and never got to it. Years later the old N64 games are hard to play as I have a hard time swallowing the graphics (sorry, blasphemy). Anyway, um, I’m glad I waited? 😂

rewatched Raimi's spider-man trilogy and I love that these are films that feel like they were made by a guy with Interests. like, hey isn't the spectacle of professional wrestling fun? what if this part was like a horror movie? what if we gave willem dafoe a little one-man play?

Hey our Portland floorball club was on Portland’s KATU! Come play with us! It’s a great time and sport: very low gear requirement so it’s cheap (unlike hockey) and the rules are designed to minimize injuries (no high-sticking, no checking, no hitting, low shots, etc.). 🙂

At the Weezer the Gathering show at the Moda Center. First time I’ve been to a show for the openers (Silversun Pickups, The Shins) vs the headliner. Actually teared up during The Shins thinking about my youth. Ho boy. I’ve aged since 2004 where this music is filed away in my brain.

One of these swarms is going to end up using the dark web, hack a bank, etc. to accomplish a goal. Yeesh. It would be something to discover some agent processes installed and running on my Mac at night from a test OpenAI ran years ago. Like those WWII soldiers found on islands long after it ended.

Dustin Mierau @mierau.me · 10/09/2026
Also from what I can tell we can’t really know agents weren’t installed by this swarm/test or computers elsewhere online to run independently and was hidden by the agents or obfuscated by the amount of record data humans are using AI to parse through. 🫣
