Fascinating Jerry Garcia quote in Cameron Crowe’s memoir “The Uncool”:
He was immediately gregarious
and delightfully prickly.

"Fuck people's music, man," Garcia said, and laughed. "That kind
of thing really irks me."

This was decades before Napster or Spotify, but Garcia could see it coming in the summer of 1973. The people's hippie, the guru of the Summer of Love, was already militant about not giving music away for free. "To get so you can play music," he continued, "you have to sacrifice a lot of what would have been your normal life. You know what I mean?
For lack of a better phrase, you have to pay the dues to get so you can play music. It's not a thing you just do. If that were so, everybody'd be making their own music and there wouldn't be professional musicians.
There'd be no need for them. For someone to deny the fact that you spent a certain amount of your life working on some sort of discipline and learning how to play... that's the rip-off. That's the state versus the individual. Anytime someone comes down on artists and claims their work on any level, I think that's pure bullshit. There's been too many great musicians who died poor. People's music? It just ain't so."

Scully wandered into the room, catching the tail end of Garci's statement. "That's the confusion that's created a lot by the press," he said,
"who identified the Dead with a sociological movement that happened in the Haight-Ashbury, right? So by the time the Grateful Dead got to New York for the first time, nobody would cover them as a music story.
Instead, the ban

The first time that Trey and I ever hung out was at Red
Rocks. Vulfpeck was opening up for Trey, I don't know, this
must have been eight years ago, something like that. And he
invited us all over for a special dinner, the house party
dinner. But guitar folks are probably like, when are you going to start

@Neddyo The interesting thing is that it "knew" that Phish.net was a great source for these answers. When I pressured it that it should tell me it doesn't know, it came up with this:
Your Approach Is the Right One in Many Cases
For questions like "When has Phish played a song in tribute to a musician that has recently passed?" —which requires
extremely specific, verifiable facts—a more honest answer might be:
"'' don't have a confirmed answer to this question. If you'd like to research further, here are some reputable resources where
you can look up Phish setlists and note any tribute performances:" "

It has come to my attention that a vile individual in NJ has this sign in his
yard with a quote from my song Teach Your Children.
I want to make it abundantly clear that I do not support this kind of hate
and intolerance, and that this disgusting message has nothing to do with
my song.

A sign like this is meant to exclude and shame people which is the very
opposite of the message that I spread through my music.
completely support the rights and lives of ALL transgender people, and
would never seek to make them feel less than or ashamed of being who
they are.
If you teach your children anything, let it be love, compassion, and
understanding. Especially of anyone who might not be exactly like them.

My advice if you are a person like me who wants to see the state
play a bigger role in our lives (Medicare for All, better transit, free
vaccination, etc.) is that you try not to spread misinformation that
make people more cynical about state capacity. Take a minute to
see if the post is true.
a Dan Mielcarz @mielcarz.bsky.social • 2h
In my experience it seems like most posts and narratives in the wake of a
disaster that seek to make people more cynical about state capacity
(whether from the right or the left) are either false or in need of a huge
asterisk.
There was a ton of this with Hurricane Helene as well.

@chopaganda @AG3rD @Mdphunk There is actually an advocacy group called Let Grow that pushes for “Reasonable Childhood Independence Laws.” Colorado actually has a model law passed in 2022 that they recommend. For more: letgrow.org
Model Bill Number 5
This is based on Colorado's law enacted through HB 22-1090, passed in 2022. Note that this bill
does not include the right to allow a child to be unattended in a car and uses a vague "reasonable
and prudent" parent test for determining what parents can allow their children to do.
A child is not neglected when allowed to participate in independent activities that a
reasonable and prudent parent would consider safe given the child's maturity, condition,
and abilities, including but not limited to: (i) traveling to and from school, including
walking, running, bicycling, or other similar mode of travel; (ii) traveling to and from
arby commercial or recreational facilities; (iti) engaging in outdoor play; and (iv)
remaining at home unattended.
