There as also the story of a program in NC that attempted to match American workers with agricultural jobs. The program failed because those whom they were able to get to the farms quit those jobs after a few weeks because it was too difficult (and didn't pay well enough).

When this was tried in Alabama (or was it Louisiana) over a decade ago, when farmers we forced to get rid of micrant workers and hire "real Americans", they had a labor problem because the "real Americans" decided that agricultural jobs were beneath them.

I think it was because of the MDPs response that Platner slow-walked his resignation filing with the Maine Dems, delaying their preparations for a renomination process by almost a week after he announced he would resign. It was his and Katz's final "fuck you" to Maine Democrats.

He also won because the people who participated tended to be more leftist, and thus were instrumental in ensureing that the candidate who came closest to the ideals Platner pretended to represent (Jackson has supported those ideals for over a decade). Platner has refused to endorse Troy Jackson.

The renomination process was an open (if chaotic) process with several candidates vying for the nom. Jackson won by being the most organized and aggressive in creating a slate of delegates who supported him, and all registered Democrats were eligible to attend county conventions to select them.

Troy Jackson was not the one Platner wanted to pick. The MDP specifically refused to allow Platner any hand in choosing his replacement. If he had, Troy's campaign would be far more effective than it has been thus far because some of the Platner team would have moved over.
