Ennui 9x12" sumi ink on bristol paper Commission for @vyruem.bsky.social This might actually be one of my most technically complex pieces I've ever made. It was a lot of fun to figure out!
Vy's OC sits morosely on a chair in an elegant room. They reach out towards the chair's empty twin. It is pouring rain outside, and the whole room is lit by a bolt of lightning. Behind them is a towering shadow with the head of a bull, and glowing, bright, eyes. Tendrils of shadow reach out from it, and wrap around our sad creature.

Finished the mini-series Sai and I really recommend it. An ice-cold slow-burn serial killer thriller about how sometimes, bad luck just falls out of the sky and lands on your head, in this case personified by a deeply unsettling man played by Teruyuki Kagawa. Kiyoshi Kurosawa comparisons are apt.
The post for Sai. A man stands in the lower left frame, slightly out of focus. the title vertically takes up most of the poster.Teruyuki Kagawa is staring at you.

The Pit #art #DarkArt #B&WArt
digital greyscale illustration, narrow and tall. A stumbling horse with two misshapen heads is at the bottom of an immensely deep pit, being engulfed in thick black sludge that is pouring and dripping straight down from the solid pitch black top third of the canvas. The sludge is dripping down almost all of its body, and pouring straight into one of the mouths as the mouth sputters. A few sludge drips are flowing straight up from the horse's body, against gravity. The bottom portion of the canvas is white and light grey despite there being no apparent light source. Static noise overlays the solid surface of the pit itself.

Digital black and white ink illustration, title at bottom: Metempsychosis. A horse skull viewed from below and to the side, as if it is looking up to the right while you are standing below it. The skull is taking up most of the square canvas. Its jaw is carved in curled filigree. Roots come from the bottom of the canvas to grasp and wrap around and through the skull. Blooming out of the skull's eye is a Rafflesia flower, and a mass of 10 hands come out of the center of it, reaching up and out beyond the top left of the canvas. Out of the back of the skull's head is a flowing mass of hair. The background shows a large bare tree with numerous bare branches, viewed as if looking straight up at it. The piece is shaded in selective hatching.digital ink illustration in warm greyscale with lots of fine line work. title at bottom: Undergrowth. two hands each coming from opposite corners, one palm down and one palm up, one's middle finger lightly touching the other's index finger. the entire canvas, including most of the visible arms, are covered in tangled, gnarled roots. veiny, branching masses spread just under the skin of the forearms.

This last day of #Invertefest: the silkworm moth, a controversial species. Breeding has left them defenseless and dependent on humans. If not intended for breeding, they are killed in the cocoon. To avoid these issues, some silk growers harvest cocoons of wild moths after they emerge. #kdk1200
Drawing of a domestic silk moth (Bombyx mori)

Caption: The domestic silk moth was first bred at least 5,000 years ago. Unable to fly because they lack mouths, and unable to fly because their wings are so heavy heavy, they are defenseless and completely dependent on humans. This has created controversy, and some have turned to Ahimsa silk, harvested from cocoons after wild moths have emerged. Ahimsa is the idea of avoiding harm to any living being.

Despite their differences, these lovelies are both Treehoppers. They mimic different things bc of differences in their environs. What interests us is the symbiosis between Hemikyptha and ants. The former secretes "honeydew;" ants feed on it and protect their food source. #Invertefest #kdk1200
Drawing of Hemikyptha marginata.

Caption: Native to South & Central America, the horn-like spikes on their "helmets" mimic sharp thorns or other plant defenses. They feed on plant sap, and secrete "honeydew." Ants protect them from predators in return for these secretions.A drawing of a treehopper with the caption: Treehoppers stand out for their elaborate helmets, adorned with horns, spikes and bulbous segments. These tiny insects, 3 to 5mm, minimc ants and wasps as a defense against predators. They vary in color from yellow & tan to brown & black, and are found on every continent save Antarctica.

Today, Kit offers you the Largid for #Invertefest. This guy seems ready to poison you with his foul smell and flavor, but he's actually quite harmless. Bugs can be just like so many alleged monsters, not actually dangerous, just trying to survive. #kdk1200 #horror
Drawing of the Largid Bug (Stenomacra marginella).

Caption: Ranging from Central America to the southern United States, Stenomacra uses foul-smelling and tasting secretions to deter predators. The orange and red edges serve as a warning. In fact, they are non-toxic and pose no threat to humans or other animals. They pose a minor threat to crops, injecting a substance to liquid fruits and vegetables to suck up

Hummingbird Hawk Moth in the garden concentrating hard on finding nectar It may be known for its hovering but I'm more taken by its teddybear eyes (& why isn't it called the shrimp moth - that tail 😂) #InverteFest #moths #Entomology #Insects #BugSky #EastCoastKin #Photohour #Bloomscrolling #ArtYear
A Hummingbird Hawk Moth feeding with its tongue inserted into a composite bloom of white flowers, while hovering. It is a large moth with a grey back and striped segmented abdomen ending in a feathery tail (divided into shrimp like lobes) Its blurred fast moving wings are orange underneath and its legs are dangling ( just like a shrimp....🤷🏻‍♀️ 😂)
They are incredibly fast moving going from flower to flower with rapid jerky movements and a devil to photograph 🙄

Yesterday Kit's #Invertefest Lopidea demanded an unusual sort of misunderstood monster, a parasite worthy of empathy. Meet Sai. Unintentionally turned by a cruelly treated krasue, she must feed, and the one who loves her must aid or stop her. Scary and sweet, it's a must-see. #kdk1200 #horror

For day 3 of #Invertefest, Kit offers Lopidea major. Evolution led to an unusual, devilish defense: rather than being inherent toxic, it stores the toxins of the plants it consumes. Mountain laurel contains a very nasty poison, no doubt the choice of many a murderer. #kdk1200 #horror
Drawing of the mountain laurel bug (Lopidea major).

Caption: Although Lopidea major is not inherently toxic, it stores toxins from the plants it feeds on. This species can cause severe gastrointestinal and neurological effects. Its deep scarlet color is a warning against toxicity as well as it's foul smell and taste. They are found mostly in North and Central America.

Today for #Invertefest we celebrate the Wedge-Shaped Beetle! They don't look too terrifying, but they are hypermetamorphic parasitoids! Larvae hitch a ride back to a nest or hive, devour young, and emerge transformed. Now *that's* the stuff of horror! Still pretty cute, though. #kdk1200 #horror

Kit had a difficult time choosing a treehopper for today's #Invertefest offering. So many choices. The diversity of appearance is related to the diversity of the environments in which they are found. Their bizarre "helmets" seem quite alien, but we find this little guy rather cute. #kdk1200

Bugs. Our favorite misunderstood monsters. They make us squirm and swoon, but they are truly beautiful, not to mention essential to life on Earth. For this week of #Invertefest, we feature the drawings of #kdk1200 technician Kit #2. Monday is the day of the Fly Weevil!
A drawing of 2 fly weevils battling in a mating ritual. Caption: Quick to fly or scurry away, their twitchy, darting behavior helps them mimic flies.
