Alpha-gal syndrome is an IgE-mediated delayed hypersensitivity to galactose-α-1,3-galactose (alpha-gal), a carbohydrate found in mammalian meat but absent from human tissue. The condition is initiated by exposure to alpha-gal through tick bites. Learn more: nej.md/4wIygTh
Diagram illustrating the alpha-gal syndrome. Panel A shows the assay process with a test tube of blood, a test capsule, and molecular interactions involving cellulose in serum. Panel B depicts human acquisition and development of alpha-gal syndrome. The top section depicts sensitization pathways, highlighting cells from mammals, microbiomes, and other factors contributing to the syndrome. The bottom section shows symptom development with a person experiencing symptoms and indicating areas of pain or discomfort.

Case Record of the Massachusetts General Hospital: A 38-year-old man was evaluated at the hospital because of postprandial abdominal pain. Six weeks earlier, a diarrheal illness had developed while he was working in Madagascar. A diagnosis was made. Full case details: nej.md/4wIygTh
A quote from a Case Record of the Massachusetts General Hospital published in the New England Journal of Medicine reads as follows: “I will approach this case by considering infectious causes of the patient’s presentation, his immune status, the timeline of symptoms relative to his travel history, and the relevant epidemiologic factors and exposures before, during, and after travel to Madagascar.” The case record is titled "A 38-Year-Old Man with Abdominal Pain" and the authors are Aima A. Ahonkhai, M.D., M.P.H., Howard M. Heller, M.D., M.P.H., and Sarah M. Schrader, M.D., Ph.D. The background color is olive green and includes the NEJM identity.

KB test RBCs: the KB test is a method to quantify fetal RBCs in maternal circulation. Acid treatment of a maternal blood sample denatures HbA in the maternal RBCs but not HbF in the fetal RBCs. Treated cells are then stained such that fetal RBCs appear bright pink. #Pathology #Hematology #OBsky
