When I was young, my parents' taxes paid for a free university education for me and my brother. The "boom" in tertiary education brought in during the Thatcher years, meant that taxpayer funded education was no longer feasible, so the crippling loans were brought in, as in the US system.

UK resident and taxpayer here. We have a graduated tax system and my top rate is 40%. In England the top rate is 45% (48% in Scotland). My cancer treatment is "free", as was my wife's, as are our annual vaccinations, visits to the GP. Shockingly, I have to pay £2.50 for parking at the hospital!
