Mikhail Kats @mickeykats.bsky.social · 2hSomehow chats to my personal gchat have the exact same notification as for a Google doc shared with me on my work account I don't get this design choice at all 000
Mikhail Kats @mickeykats.bsky.social · 14hI see I have more comments to write to the government Every one takes time and effort, and likely goes into the shredder. But got to keep doing it 120
Mikhail Kats @mickeykats.bsky.social · 08/10/2026I have a feeling it won't be very easy for me, but I will try this, thanks! 010
Mikhail Kats @mickeykats.bsky.social · 07/10/2026I haven't tried very hard, but every option I tried not something I would keep going on a regular basis To what do you add the protein isolate? I know people put it in shakes and stuff but I can't seem to do it 330
Mikhail Kats @mickeykats.bsky.social · 07/10/2026It's exciting for me, individually, to use tools that are so useful At the societal level that are absolutely collective questions to answer about pros and cons of a technology, how fast to advance it, etc. At the individual level though? Anyway, here I am using a smartphone. 110
Mikhail Kats @mickeykats.bsky.social · 07/10/2026I held out on a smartphone for much longer than most around me, until 2013. And I do think smartphones made us less social, or at least made our interactions/communications less healthy But eventually gravity wins, and we all have to adjust to new technology 110
Mikhail Kats @mickeykats.bsky.social · 07/10/2026Yeah. Asking the AI tool is quicker and easier than asking a human, and you get an immediate response .. As we get used to these powerful new tools, we need to work to maintain human connection 110
Mikhail Kats @mickeykats.bsky.social · 07/10/2026The research / mentorship bundle is good, and it would be a shame if it becomes substantially unbundled 020
Mikhail Kats @mickeykats.bsky.social · 07/10/2026While I was writing/editing my one paper with an AI-generated result, I was a bit frustrated because it took about the same amount of time as editing papers by students, but I was doing the same work for <half the gain The paper was written, but no one (except me) learned anything in the process 120
Mikhail Kats @mickeykats.bsky.social · 07/10/2026I think I just don't know anything about math and should probably stop even idly speculating -- it's like talking about the internal workings of a country I've flown through but otherwise never set foot in** **Took one proper math class in undergrad 110
Mikhail Kats @mickeykats.bsky.social · 07/10/2026All I saw was this I think it's extremely fair to be unhappy with this state of affairs, and I know ~nothing about math, but I'm confused about the last part I don't quite get how solving problems leaves the fields less fertile.. wouldn't it just open up more problems? bsky.app/profile/dang... 200

Mikhail Kats @mickeykats.bsky.social · 05/10/2026We are fighting with a proof, where we have references *inside* a figure, but the journal keeps re-ordering our references for some reason, so we have to keep re-making the figure (lucky we even caught it) I think we're going to stop using reference numbers in figures -- this is too painful 020
Mikhail Kats @mickeykats.bsky.social · 05/10/2026I have already made use of the intuition I developed when writing this paper several times in my research Probably I will be the only one since I have clearly engaged with it long enough to actually build that intuition. But still, pretty cool 020

Mikhail Kats @mickeykats.bsky.social · 05/10/2026I also have a hard time believing that the rules could not be made to evolve in time, as changes in the world render the earlier interpretation unworkable (but easily fixable!) We do that with courts interpreting laws, at least to some extent 000
Mikhail Kats @mickeykats.bsky.social · 05/10/2026Don't know much about the optogenetics folks, but ofc there is already discussion about who was overlooked The three-winner rule is archaic. Just give the award to the discovery/invention, and let people sort out the credit afterward 100
Mikhail Kats @mickeykats.bsky.social · 05/10/2026I actually have a paper in preparation where we do something similar to help solve a very narrow physics-y problem.. 070
Mikhail Kats @mickeykats.bsky.social · 05/10/2026A scary related thought in my mind is that once we have an architecture that can learn in real time and is always on and thinking, whatever comes out might actually be conscious 1140
Mikhail Kats @mickeykats.bsky.social · 05/10/2026I feel like the fact that we can learn in real time is a huge, huge advantage I'd be ~useless at so many tasks if my memory reset every hour to like a year ago, and all I could save is some stuff written on scrap paper 2221

Mikhail Kats @mickeykats.bsky.social · 02/10/2026I mean, that's what a pressure cooker does Though I don't believe I've heard of a vacuum cooker, I guess because cooking at partial pressure is slower, plus you need a pump 2150
Mikhail Kats @mickeykats.bsky.social · 02/10/2026I don't think linkedin can serve the same role. For example there is no straightforward way to list all of your papers 030
Mikhail Kats @mickeykats.bsky.social · 01/10/2026I'm confused about what an active submission means. Mikhail Kats @mickeykats.bsky.social · 28/09/2026Of course the other solution is to engage before reading, and I gather that is a common approach on social media 100
Mikhail Kats @mickeykats.bsky.social · 28/09/2026An issue with links on social networks is that once you click into it, it's not easy to like/repost/comment, because you're now on a different website Might be nice for bluesky to have some sort of "catchup" feature where you get a list of links you've clicked on recently and can like/repost/etc 100
