💯 Michigan, get the facts! Michigan’s current tax system maintains and worsens racial inequities. 🤔 How can tax policies contribute to racial inequities? While tax policies are often considered “race-neutral,” they can deepen existing inequities when they ignore racial bias and discrimination.

5) School vouchers conflict with school of choice Michigan already has school of choice and the federal voucher program isn't applicable for a wide range of people. What we often see is the voucher does not cover enough of the cost for private school tuition. Some states even raised tuition. #mileg

4) Lack of accountability for fed school voucher program We've seen in AZ and FL the taxpayer dollars associated with the vouchers being used to pay for trips, TVs and things that are either not allowable expenses or maybe the state didn't qualify as being allowable yet. #protectpublicschools

3) Vouchers don’t incentivize new choices Looking at New Hampshire, fed vouchers were used by students already attending private schools. We don't see people making a different choice. So, these dollars are just another scheme to subsidize the rich and people already affording private education.

2) Cautionary tales from states that applied federal voucher funds to public education. Voucher advocates are hopeful that public schools might be eligible for voucher money as well. However, if we look at other state's voucher programs, in reality it's just not playing out equally. #mileg

1) Voucher expansion re-segregates schools by race and income and illustrate structural racism in Modern education system. After the Brown v. BOE decision (1954), southern states used vouchers to increase enrollment at private schools for white students in order to continue segregation. #mileg
