This is why you should leave it to the second sentence, they don't read that far.

They have a fungal STD on them too (Hesperomyces, the little yellow sprouts)!

Not to say that all science communication needs to have someone become a scientist at the end of it, of course, but first generation scientists might be a good subjective marker of science communication working in some way.

Michiel de Groot @michieldegroot.bsky.social · 22/04/2026
I'd have to look up more on the topic, but I think one way of gauging this a little is to look at first generation scientists, i.e. scientists who don't come from a family background of academics. How did they get there, and can we encourage that?

Michiel de Groot @michieldegroot.bsky.social · 22/04/2026
Sciency parents raise more sciency kids for sure - but I think there's a lot of great communicators who have reached a very wide audience of kids regardless of background (think Sesame Street or Steve Irwin). I think it's also a good entryway to scicomm to otherwise unreceptive parents, too.

Michiel de Groot @michieldegroot.bsky.social · 22/04/2026
It did make me wonder about a specific slice of the audience: kids. In my (anecdotal) experience, this is the audience that is the most generally receptive, regardless of background (including political leaning of their parents). There, you're effectively *creating* that receptive adult audience.

Michiel de Groot @michieldegroot.bsky.social · 22/04/2026
Great piece! I've wondered about this self-selecting audience for scicomm myself - there's something great about educating an enthusiastic audience, but in doing so as communicator you're missing all the people who never came to you in the first place.

"AI can get in the way of learning, and it can promote learning, depending on how it's used." I really like Terry McGlynn Terry McGlynn's conceptual take on how we might think about student use of AI in courses. https:// scienceforeveryone.s... 1/2

What to do when student turn in assignments generated by AI?
More importantly: what not to do

We made a few terabytes of images, which were reconstructed to create 3D images over the past couple of years by Michel back in Paris, resulting in this paper! Doesn't it still look like he has the ~99 million year old wind blowing through his antennae?

The technique to create 3D image out of the microscopy is called micro-tomography, which was what we spent most our time doing. It is useful if you want to look at fragile fossil beetles trapped in amber! Michel Perreau, a French beetle and fossil expert, asked us to image them for him.

It's a massive complex with a big particle accelerator, which takes a long time to get around - many people had little mopeds or bikes. Particle accelerators produce extremely bright, focused, and tunable X-ray beams, which can be used to "see through" objects and reconstruct the details inside.
