From Cyberselfish: Although many impor-
tant potential and actual violations of constitutionality and What's
Right are bruited about on alt.cypherpunks with sense and smarts,
the tone is mostly a mixture of the paranoid rantings, reminiscent
of what showed up occasionally in '60s underground newspapers,
plus something new, more desperate and more scary. The gestalt is
of testosterone-poisoned guys with chips on their shoulders and
too much time on their hands.

4/ Borsook divided the tech ”libertarians” into two main types: the Ravers and the Gilders. The Ravers are the ones who go to Burning Man and project countercultural ideas. The Gilders are the Peter Thiel types, more overtly focused on money and power. But they are birds of a feather.
From Cyberselfish: Emblem of the ravers is former Grateful Dead lyricist and Electronic Frontier Foundation* cofounder John Perry Barlow. Barlow
wrote the notorious "Declaration of Independence of Cyber-
space," which, in language longing to evoke Henry David Thoreau
in "Civil Disobedience" and the Jefferson Airplane's late '60s revo-
lutionary call-to-arms, "Volunteers of America," cries out that you
are old and sick and tired and tyrannical and we are beautiful and
free and loving and of the future. Posted Net-wide, his "Declara-
tion" is perhaps the best-known expression of this kind of techno-
libertarianism. It's no coincidence that the last fad that Timothy
Leary embraced before his death was the Net and that he was
taken on as a kind of Jove figure by Barlow and other cyberhippie
Utopians.

2/ In 2001, Borsook said tech "libertarianism" reflected an adolescent mindset, with a craving for unchecked independence & resistance to constraint. She warned that tech libertarians wanted an anti-human world that worked more like a computer. From "Cyberselfish," a book based on her 90s writing:
from cyberselfish by paulina borsook: It's an inability to reconcile the demands of being individual with
the demands of participating in society, which coincides beautifully
with a preference for, and glorification of, being the solo comman-
der of one's computer in lieu of any other economically viable be-
havior. Computers are so much more rule-based, controllable,
fixable, and comprehensible than any human will ever be. As many
political schools of thought do, these technolibertarians make a

Ten years of relentlessly hateful, comically elitist anti-democratic politics across the white people world, helpfully summarised. The wrong people are talking, the wrong people are deciding and it’s harming the careers of important people who actually matter. Smithers! Release the hounds
The incident fits a broader pattern in the discourse around 'free speech' and 'cancel culture': whatever comes from the top down is freedom; whatever comes from the bottom up is bullying and censorship. When Macklemore is dropped at the behest of the billionaire stadium owner Robert Kraft, it's an exercise of the freedom of businesses to 'demonstrate their values' by deciding whom to platform. But when Ed Sheeran's fans decide not to buy tickets to his performances, or even demand refunds, it's bullying, mob behaviour. Since most people are not billionaires and do not own stadiums, they can exercise meaningful power only collectively. The collective exercise of power must therefore be demonised.
