Half marathon completed Sunday in warm and humid temps. I was a minute slower despite training harder and for much longer. So I was rather disappointed. Now back to job hunting and working three jobs 🙄🤣 #running #immigrantlife #academia

I do not recommend reading The Perfect Heresy when you’ve got insomnia at 2am. Brilliant book, but the Albigensian Crusade is decidedly not bedtime reading. Humans are awful

Today Iran said they won't negotiate with Trump anymore because he's insane and so they'll just wait until 2029 and also he fell asleep in the Oval Office again but the media is too focused on trying to divide Democrats and the Attorney General is a pedo protector and ah fuck we're so cooked chat

Well in reality I should’ve figured moving to the UK at 43 was not going to be easy or cheap, but I didn’t realise it would be an emotional rollercoaster of ends of friendships, anxiety about my career and never-ending £££ (time and thought) paid to the Home Office

The perimenopause exhaustion is real. For me, that leads to the perimenopause weight gain and lethargy. I have articles to write, visas to apply for, an half marathon to train for and absolutely nothing is getting done. All I’m doing is looking at booking a trip to Italy Send help. And ££ lol

Have just calculated the fees for the Global Talent visa and good grief. I need a loan or a GoFundMe 😭 I’ve already paid for the Skilled Worker visa through 2029. Would be nice if those fees could just be carried over, but no…

I love the NHS. Popped into urgent treatment for an ear issue, no clear cause, so they referred me to my GP who saw me straightaway the next day. Got a £9.90 script for nasal steroids, referral to audiology and ENT; no clue what’s causing these recurrent ear problems, but it’s likely allergies /1

This is probably a dumb question but hypothetically speaking, if a person with a PhD in one historical era/region wanted to switch to studying a totally different one, how would they go about this? I love LatAm, but the market for that in the UK is zilch and I started grad life as a medievalist…

There’s a chance I’ll be made redundant. Thankfully I have some visa options (already spent £££ on a 5 year visa but hey ho), but always remember that your loyalty, hard work and the fact that you’re wildly overqualified is irrelevant

If you use the Turnitin AI detector, do you find that it's pretty accurate? I've got nearly an entire class whose papers are 75% or more AI generated only. I specifically told them not to do this.

To follow up on my previous post, as it’s evident I’ll never get to teach it again at my former institution, I do a really great and wildly popular class on Aztecs, Incas and Mayas (I didn’t create the class or come up with the title, but I made it “mine”).

UK based folks: does anyone know of agencies that specifically assist skilled workers or global talent in finding new roles? In the US they’re called headhunting firms, but I don’t know if that’s the right term in the UK? I’d consider Ireland as well
