Well, judging it as some problematic privilege-drenched generational statement instead of the wittily written, smartly self-aware, character-driven TV comedy that it is *without having ever seen it* is pretty much exactly what I'm talking about.

Unsurprising but pivotal news on the impending carriage-horse ban. Official vote is on Oct. 22. www.politico.com/news/2026/10...

Mamdani and City Council Speaker Julie Menin strike deal to ban NYC horse carriage industry
The deal marks a major breakthrough in a long-running effort to outlaw the industry. It is also likely to inflame Mamdani’s relationship with a powerful local union.

This week for Talk of the Town, I spoke to the director and cast of “Kramer/Fauci,” the theater piece that recreates a 1993 C-SPAN battle between frenemies Larry Kramer and Anthony Fauci—with the help of foam and a chicken costume. www.newyorker.com/magazine/202...

Kramer and Fauci—Enemies to Friends to Protagonists
The playwright and the immunologist famously argued about AIDs live on C-SPAN, in 1993. Their heated exchange now unfolds in a new play that almost included a “Guys and Dolls” song break.

Seriously though, as someone who knows every beat of Kramer vs. Kramer, I appreciated how Jordan Firstman clearly used it as a roadmap, with himself as a coke-snorting, gay-ass Ted Kramer. It works!

Among the people I spoke to: Alec Baldwin, Bill de Blasio, animal-rights activists, the parking mogul behind the anti-carriage crusade, and the shop steward of the carriage drivers, who called this “an existential moment for human beings.”
Carriage horses share Central Park with owls, blue jays, red-tailed hawks, mallards, red-eared sliders, chipmunks, Virginia opossums, raccoons (who make cameos at Shakespeare in the Park), a small and elusive community of coyotes, and more than two thousand Eastern gray squirrels. But they aren’t wildlife, and they aren’t on display, unlike the snow leopards, sea lions, and penguins at the Central Park Zoo. They are neither pets (dogs, cats) nor pests (rats, roaches), making them unique in the urban menagerie. They are workers.

Perhaps that’s why our relationship with them is so fraught. To those who want the horses liberated, they’re indentured servants, forced to haul tourists around in a Sisyphean loop. To others, horse-drawn carriages, like cobblestone streets, are charming throwbacks to New York’s past, enshrined onscreen in “Barefoot in the Park” (Jane Fonda and Robert Redford), “Sex and the City” (Carrie and Mr. Big), and “The Muppets Take Manhattan” (Kermit and Miss Piggy). If they disappeared, after more than a hundred and sixty years, what would we lose?

For this week's New Yorker, I did a deep dive into the battle over horse-drawn carriages in Central Park. How did this seemingly quirky municipal issue become a decades-long political saga? And will the city really ban carriages? www.newyorker.com/magazine/202...

Someone asked me “Who’s your favorite Mary?” out of nowhere tonight, and I didn’t realize he meant my favorite star of “Oh, Mary!” (duh, Cole), so I went through all the famous Marys—Tyler Moore, J. Blige, Queen of Scots—and landed on Mary Pickford. Who’s yours?

My pet peeve: when you’re meeting someone and they text, “Here 10 mins early.” What am I supposed to do about that? Make my subway go faster? Teleport? I’ll still be on time, but now I feel late and anxious. Just wait 10 minutes and don’t tell me! (Will repost every time this happens.)

Duncan was both sardonically funny AND a committed Buddhist who chanted every day. I tried to capture both in this piece from 2015, where we visited a Soka Gakkai meeting in the financial district as “Spring Awakening” was back in Broadway. www.newyorker.com/magazine/201...

Bob Mackie, High Priest of Sequins, RIP! I had the most delightful conversation with him in 2018 about dressing Cher through the years. "Anything I put on her, she went, ‘Oh, that’s fun.’ It never occurred to her to wear anything ordinary.” www.newyorker.com/culture/cult...

From what I've heard, the veteran Muppeteers and Seth Rogen's people were at bitter odds over tone. A lot of "Gonzo wouldn't say this" kind of stuff. The special turned out great, but I'm not surprised that everyone's throwing up their little Kermit hands in exasperation.

Nothing on television is quite like “Famous Last Words,” which falls somewhere between “Inside the Actors Studio” and a video will. Falchuk is part Oprah Winfrey, part death doula, part celebrity Grim Reaper. The subject, like Schrödinger’s cat, is both alive and newly deceased. The show’s promise is that, unlike in other interviews, these well-publicized figures can finally speak freely,

I mean, I do think "The Rainbow Connection" should have won. "Arthur's Theme" deserved it in '82, but I would have nominated "Piggy's Fantasy."

Parker was the subject of a Talk of the Town interview I'll remember forever, because instead of talking about her memoir we ended up trapped in a courtyard garden and had to climb a fence to freedom! Sort of a typical afternoon for her, I imagine. www.newyorker.com/magazine/201...

It is crazy that "Man or Muppet" has an Oscar and "The Rainbow Connection" doesn't... BUT I love that "Norma Rae" song. I asked my piano teacher as a teenager if I could learn it, and the opening chords are now the only thing I remember how to play.

Maybe they quietly work on themselves and become a better person and redeem themselves through words and action. Maybe we believe and forgive them. Maybe they continue working and maybe we consume their product. But even that's extra. No one is owed a Met Gala on the other side.

Michael Schulman @michaelschulman.bsky.social · 29/08/2026
The final step in redemption/forgiveness is NOT honoring someone at a gala or casting them in a major motion picture or showering them with Tony Awards or electing them to high office or giving them a Netflix special.

Since when did not wanting to throw the fanciest party in the world in someone’s honor become “canceling” them?
The writer Andrew Solomon, who is a member of the Met board, plans to host a gathering at his home, where he will speak with Galliano before a group of trustees and donors. Solomon, a supporter of the scheduled exhibition, said that “confronting cancel culture is a healthier way to go forward than bowing to it.”
