Inspiration: Everyone Rejected The Beatles! This video does a wonderful job of cataloging the many failures that The Beatles went through before they broke through. I hadn't realized that at one point that Sir Paul was ready to give up music to be an electrician. youtu.be/xcaQJVN4PH0

Laserdisc player died. Totally dead, won't power on. Fuse is fine. The only place I could find that would repair it held onto it for 3 months without giving me an estimate. If anyone knows a place, hmu, I'm resigned to buying another player.

the people i met who worked at apple during that era tended to be super bright, yet also super cool and/or interesting (quite a bit of hippy culture which i really miss seeing)

Early TV ads were a lifeline for Japanese animators. This stuff allowed for amazing creativity, even when other avenues didn't. Japan had world-class animated ads from the '50s onward. We're looking into a few of them today: animationobsessive.substack.com/p/japans-oth...

DePatie–Freleng Enterprises did the opening animation for "I Dream of Jeannie" (1965) which holds up well and sets the tone for the series www.facebook.com/groups/16134...

Over 40+ years this soundtrack track (Metropolis, 1984) really holds up which is a testament to the power of Bonnie Tyler's vocals and the craftsmanship of Giorgio Moroder's composition — rest in peace Bonnie www.youtube.com/watch?v=3FrL...

i've been playing this charli xcx song again and again, the beat is really solid and catchy, plus there's a really nice low-fi quality to the vocals (her making fun of the commercial side of the medium reminds me of paperback writer) www.youtube.com/watch?v=vNl8...

Occasionally I run across the question of whether Charles Schulz invented the term "good grief!", used so frequently in Peanuts. He wasn't even the one who introduced it to the comic page. "Tillie the Toiler" used it 16 times in 1921, before Schulz was born.

Tillie the Toiler sits at a dining table, saying "Good grief! Is he. ever going to bring that sandwich? The service is terriblle."

In 1964, when my father was 20 years old, he went to Mississippi to register voters as part of Freedom Summer. NPR interviewed us in 2021: www.npr.org/2021/07/14/1...

O WASOW: Papa, can I ask you a question? Just how does it feel to watch the Voting Rights Act get eviscerated by a thousand cuts?

B WASOW: I just don't understand how people like the judges on the Supreme Court can do that. I mean, how could they have so little sense of history? Or is it truly that they are - that they have ill will? I find it astonishing.
