With a Vengeance (https://www.gettyimages.no/detail/news-photo/bruce-willis-holds-a-sandwich-board-with-the-message-i-hate-news-photo/635926163)

"Friday, Room 4, 15:00 - 16:00 (UTC+02) Talk (60 min)
Bootable applications - next steps

This is a follow up to my previous session "Bootable applications - an introduction". It is not required as we will briefly summarize the key takeaways allowing us to move further.
Tags: Embedded, Fun

In this session we will investigate how to build complete interactive programs such as games and UI-driven applications, still without ever booting into your regular operating system. Learn what is possible as we throw away some tens of millions lines of code we have learned to depend and rely on every day!

We will utilize UEFI-complient systems, allowing us to boot it on any compliant PC system / emulator (e.g. qemu). We'll use the system level languages Zig and C for the examples."

Litt samme vibber.
I have so much gratitude to people who wrote extremely complex software character-by-character. It already feels difficult to remember how much effort it really took.

Thank you for getting us to this point.

Reading this thread, I can’t help think of this gem from Naomi Wu:
Tweet from @RealSexyCyborg: “This was fractal stupidity in action. Each bit of stupid, is made of more stupid. A veritable Mandelbrot set of stupid- supported on the backs of four giant stupids, and before you ask what's under them- it's stupid all the way down. It has been a self-own of epic proportions.”

That's a big if you're starting with there, Nadella.
Excerpt from tweet (https://x.com/satyanadella/status/1968677244861379012) by Satya Nadella (@satyanadella):
"If intelligence is the log of compute… it starts with a lot of compute! And that’s why we’re scaling our GPU fleet faster than anyone else."

Please - keep anthropomorphizing your glorified RNGs as if they have any sense of intent or agency.
Tweets from OpenAI:
"Today we’re releasing research with
@apolloaievals
.

In controlled tests, we found behaviors consistent with scheming in frontier models—and tested a way to reduce it.

While we believe these behaviors aren’t causing serious harm today, this is a future risk we’re preparing for"

"Scheming = when an AI behaves one way on the surface while hiding its true goals.

Today’s deployed systems have little opportunity to scheme in ways that could cause serious harm. The most common failures are simple deceptions—like pretending to complete a task without doing it. We’ve studied and mitigated these issues and made meaningful improvements in GPT-5 over earlier models.

But as AIs take on more complex, long-term tasks with real-world impact, the potential for harmful scheming will grow—so our safeguards and testing must grow with it."

What the bloody... To be this disconnected from the effects of what you're spearheading when in such a position should be grounds for negligence verdicts.

Anyway, here goes!
AI-play on the "Dead horse theory" for modern business management.
"The Tribal wisdom of the Indians, passed on from generation to generation, says that, “When you discover that you are riding a dead horse, the best strategy is to dismount.” However, in modern AI-development, far more advanced strategies are often employed, such as:

1. When unable to perform their duties, explain doubters that the horse isn't really that dead (or stupid), you're just asking it wrongly
2. Teach that dead horses requires a particular formal way of being commanded for them to perform adequately. Then establish a separate engineering field of dead-horse-whispering
3. Claim that dead horses as really just a smidgeon away from becoming unicorns, but further investments are needed
4. Explain that although you horse may appear dead, you have - in the back of your stable - already transformed one into a unicorn. Explain then that unicorns are dangerous and that you require money _not_ to release it
5. Stack a bunch of different dead horses together and explain that multi-horsal is the new cool thing
6. Build ever-increasing dead horse centres to provide enough capacity and as the dead horse centres requires insubordinate amounts of power you build power plants to support them. This all helps selling the idea of their fundamental value
7. The reason dead horses aren't performing well enough is that they are not given enough leeway
8. Fire all your staff as dead horses cost less and doesn't complain
9. Rehire as your previous strategy of firing in favour of dead horses didn't (yet) pan out. You're just too ahead of the curve!
10. Hype investors to invest in your dead horse production on the basis that they simply cannot afford to miss out in case this is the future of horsing
11. Argue that dead horses aren't used enough places yet. Their inevitable usefulness will become clear once they're everywhere
12. Pay to have every living horse killed to make your dead horses appear relatively product…

Thanks to @ndcconferences.com for including my talk "Bootable applications - an introduction" for their NDC Oslo conference in May 2025. I look forward to have some fun with everybody joining me on @ Room 5 at 11:40 on Friday 23rd of May. ndcoslo.com/agenda/boota...

Friday Room 5 11:40 -12:40

Title: Bootable applications - an introduction

Description: What is really required to build a PC-application without an operating system? Join me on this hands-on journey approaching zero dependency by writing and compiling an application that supports the BIOS-variant UEFI, allowing us to boot it on any compliant PC system / emulator (e.g. qemu).
