In New Orleans to give a talk on Joan of Arc. Thought I’d get into the local spirit.

@michaellivingston.com's Bloody Crowns popped up in a partner library's Libby; I've had it on the TBR list since hearing him on the @americanmedieval.bsky.social ⭐️ Huh, I wondered, I hardly have any bandwidth for reading nonfiction these days, can I brain it? & immediately sank into it like a STONE🤩

This spring I had the chance to go to Normandy and follow in the footsteps of the men who were tasked with opening Dog-1 on Omaha Beach — the landing dramatized in Saving Private Ryan. The truth was far more incredible and moving than a movie ever could be. Out now on History Hit

Nice get to find the original covers! These are now being re-released with new titles, and there’s also a novella out there, too! (The novella is included as an appendix to the new book 1.)

I’m open to seeing what the full publication presents as evidence, and I’ll be happy to be wrong if the facts dictate it … but what has been put forward so far doesn’t work on some VERY basic levels and is wildly out of touch with the state of the field.

Michael Livingston @michaellivingston.com · 22/03/2026
Truly, I just love how he methodically, patiently, and even *generously* lays out the evidence here. Model work for the historian. Kudos, @marcmorris.bsky.social 👍👍

For days I’ve been getting requests for comment about this theory. Like Marc, I’ve been putting them off until I see the details. But I’ll say he does a *great* job laying out some of the most basic problems here. (There are more, as Marc knows, but these already put holes below waterline.)

right. one of the best things I have read recently is @michaellivingston.com’s Bloody Crowns, where he argues that our concept of the 116 year span of the Hundred Years War is a 19thc invention and proposes a 200 year frame that makes the conflict make a LOT more sense to me.

I’ve been accused of making too much of that impact — it’s how I start my book on Agincourt — but I really don’t think I am. Was very pleased when Dan used it for his biography.

I’ll ask around, but off the top of my head I don’t know of anyone who has gone further than that. My unpublished research has delved into some other aspects and ramifications of that moment, but not the question of who the men were. Sorry!

Bradmore’s own account says that the climactic moment was witnessed by “the diverse gentlemen and the servants of the prince.” Doesn’t tell us who those folks were, but it might be read as indicating that the king was NOT there.
