How does space mediate interpersonal dynamics? Thinking back to my architecture undergraduate degree, I am wondering if there’s anyone doing research into the ways the qualities physical spade/configuration of space impacts mental health/wellbeing?

An ancient Greek silver coin depicting a bee! 🐝 😍 Minted in Ephesus, 390-380 BC. Photo Getty Museum #Archaeology
A Getty Museum photo showing a silver tetradrachm (four-drachma coin) stamped in high relief on the obverse of the coin with a bee viewed from above, within a dotted border. It is dark grey silver against a lighter grey background. Relief details include legs, wings, antennae, segmented abdomen and sting. The Greek letters, Ε (‘epsilon’) and Φ (‘phi’), an abbreviation for ‘Ephesus’, are placed either side of the bee. Diameter 7 mm.

From the museum catalogue:
“The reverse shows the foreparts of a stag kneeling in right profile, looking back towards a palm tree. An inscription to the right reads ΚΑΡΝΩ[Ψ] (‘KARNO[PS]’).
The bee, stag, and palm are all emblems of Ephesus, a Greek city on the west coast of Turkey. This city was an important center of worship for the Greek goddess Artemis, and the images on Ephesian coinage typically promote this association. The bee was originally the symbol of an early Anatolian goddess who the Greeks later identified with their goddess, Artemis; so close was the connection that the priestesses of the goddess were called "honey bees." The two Greek letters, Ε (‘epsilon’) and Φ (‘phi’), are an abbreviation for Ephesus. The palm tree alludes to Artemis' birth beneath a palm tree on the island of Delos. The stag – an animal sacred to Artemis – symbolizes the goddess' role as protector of wild animals, and may also refer to the sculptures that flanked her cult statue in the temple at Ephesus”

Both experiences impressed upon me the depth of practice that reaches back to work with ancestral makers and pulls forward their spirit into the present. Alongside these works Gates presented his own ceramic and sculptural objects (one pictured here).

Gates presented two vessels made by Dave the Potter (enslaved potter from South Carolina in the 1800s), and transferred ownership of these pieces to his living ancestors.

Late last year I opened my first solo exhibition in ceramics and depth psychology. My focus was on "Exploring the Ground of Being," a term that acknowledges my inner psychological process as well as my practice with clay. This video dives deeper into my work and some of the thinking behind the work.

For much of my life I’ve been a big to-do list person, and New Year’s resolutions were no exception. This year I’m trying something new: goal bingo! From IG examples, I created my own to try to find a framework that’s less all-or-nothing. 👩🏻‍💻
Bingo card with goal statements inside each square, colored by category: academic, artistic, body, lifestyle, sensuality.

CERAMICS & DEPTH PSYCHOLOGY
2025 | MICHAEL HEADRICK

We get messages from time to time from the unconscious: dreams, fantasies, intuitions, visions and so on; and it is from these that we draw the conclusion of a psychical existence in ourselves which is totally different to our conscious mind.

Choosing "no contact" is saying: I will no longer play this given role while being emotionally estranged and left without emotional contact. Relationships are built on connection and care, not duty. Choosing "no contact" with hurtful relationships is telling oneself: I deserve connection and care.

Michael 🫧 @michaelheadrick.bsky.social · 04/12/2025
Estrangement is the opposite of connection or relationality. It's important to note here that some people who make the decision to be "no contact" were already emotionally estranged from the parent or family system... sometimes for their entire lives (speaking from experience).

Michael 🫧 @michaelheadrick.bsky.social · 04/12/2025
Oprah recently did a podcast on the topic of adult children choosing "no contact" with family members. I didn't listen to the episode, but in clips I felt that sometimes the language used focused on parents being "estranged" from children; as if the child was upsetting the family dynamic.
