Five seats. A handful of quiet rooms. And all of us. We can do this. I've counted it a hundred ways and we can actually do this. So, let's go get it. Let’s make history, together. It’s all in my bio. Push.

I want to tell them I found my people. I want to tell them we were outspent and out-mapped and we did it anyway, because two hundred and then two thousand and then twenty thousand of us decided that a quiet room in Raleigh belongs to the people who live here.

They are not waiting for a wave. They're just going. They need us behind them. That's all this is. My kids are going to ask me what I did. Not in some grand historical sense, just, at the dinner table someday. “Dad, what did you do?”

Somewhere in North Carolina tonight there's a teacher filling out paperwork at her kitchen table, wondering if anyone will show up for her. There's a canvasser lacing up for a Saturday. There's a volunteer learning a database she didn't know existed six weeks ago.

I'm the opposite. Because five seats is small. Five seats is a number you can hold in your hand. The people who redrew that map are betting that it's too boring to fight over, that you'll look away, that the quiet is on their side. It isn't. Not anymore. Not if you're reading this.

Before the vote there were kitchen tables. Somebody always had to believe in the room before anybody believed in the moment. That's where we are. In the room. Before the moment. I have to tell you: I am not discouraged.

Here's what I keep coming back to. Every hard thing this country has ever done, it did in the quiet first. Before the bridge in Selma there were church basements.

The two hundred people are a movement. The one person is a transaction. And if ten dollars isn't something you have right now, I mean this just as much: forward this to someone who's never given to a state race in their life. Tell them about the room.

Sen. Michael K. Garrett @michaelgarrett.bsky.social · 22/07/2026
The quiet rooms are where they do it. The quiet rooms are cheap. And nobody is watching. Be the person watching. What I'm asking. Give what you can. 10 dollars. 25 a month. Whatever is real for you, because I would rather have two hundred people at ten dollars than one person at two thousand.

Sen. Michael K. Garrett @michaelgarrett.bsky.social · 22/07/2026
They pick who referees the next election. So, when someone tells you the Senate race is the whole ballgame, they're not lying to you. Those races matter enormously. But they are the loudest room, and the loudest room is not the room where they take your vote away.
110
Sen. Michael K. Garrett @michaelgarrett.bsky.social · 22/07/2026
And the people in that Raleigh committee room? They write the voting laws. They decide the early voting sites. They draw the congressional maps that decide who runs Washington, for your state too, because a House majority is a House majority no matter which state supplied it.
110
Sen. Michael K. Garrett @michaelgarrett.bsky.social · 22/07/2026
For a rounding error on a single U.S. Senate race, you can fund an entire caucus program. Not one ad. The whole program. Every candidate. Every door.
110
Sen. Michael K. Garrett @michaelgarrett.bsky.social · 22/07/2026
Two point eight billion dollars, mostly for thirty-second spots that you will mute. A competitive state legislative race costs somewhere between eighty thousand and a few hundred thousand dollars. Read those two numbers again.
110
Sen. Michael K. Garrett @michaelgarrett.bsky.social · 22/07/2026
That's it. That's the whole margin between a state that trusts its people and a state that controls them. Now, here's the part I need you to sit with, especially if you don't live in North Carolina. Spending on U.S. Senate ads this cycle is projected to hit a record breaking $2.8 billion.
110
Sen. Michael K. Garrett @michaelgarrett.bsky.social · 22/07/2026
We need five seats. Not fifty. Not a wave. Five. I've knocked those doors. I know those precincts. Some of these races are going to come down to a few hundred votes, and a few hundred votes is a mail piece, a canvasser, a week of paid organizing.
110
Sen. Michael K. Garrett @michaelgarrett.bsky.social · 22/07/2026
Field staff. Data. Mail. The ability to put a real campaign around a middle school teacher or a nurse or a veteran who decided to run and has never done this before. Candidates don't build that alone. They can't. The caucus builds it once and shares it out.
110
Sen. Michael K. Garrett @michaelgarrett.bsky.social · 22/07/2026
So let me tell you what we're doing about it. I'm the Deputy Democratic Leader in the North Carolina Senate. I'm raising money for our caucus program, and a caucus program is just this: the shared engine that a party's legislative candidates run on together.
110
Sen. Michael K. Garrett @michaelgarrett.bsky.social · 22/07/2026
One room. One vote. A congressional seat, gone. Here's what I need you to understand: the people who want to take your vote from you are not confused about where power lives. They found the quietest room in America and they moved in.
110
Sen. Michael K. Garrett @michaelgarrett.bsky.social · 22/07/2026
North Carolina is a 50/50 state. With gerrymandering, our delegation was already 10 Republicans and 4 Democrats. Under the new map it could be 11 and 3. Redistricting bills in North Carolina cannot be vetoed. Not by the Governor you elected. Not by anyone.

Sen. Michael K. Garrett @michaelgarrett.bsky.social · 22/07/2026
You didn't see it on the news. There was no chyron. There was no cable panel breaking it down at nine o'clock. That's no accident. That's the design. Last October, in rooms like that one, the General Assembly redrew NC’s congressional map in the middle of the decade because Trump told them to.

Sen. Michael K. Garrett @michaelgarrett.bsky.social · 22/07/2026
Five Seats. I want to tell you about a room. It's a committee room. Fluorescent lights. Eleven people. No cameras. No national press. On a Tuesday afternoon in that room, with nobody watching, they decided who gets to vote in North Carolina and how hard we're going to make it for them.

So let’s honor them with more than a moment of silence. Let’s honor them with our hands, and our votes, and our resolve. Let’s write something they would be proud of. Let’s get to work. Push.

They handed us the most precious inheritance in human history: the power to choose our own destiny, and the destiny we leave to our children. They wrote the first lines of a story they knew they would never get to finish, and trusted us to keep writing. The pen is in our hands now.

Let’s leave this country wider than we found it, with room enough for everyone willing to call it home. Let’s close the distance between a child’s dream and a child’s chance. Let’s honor the dignity of work the way they honored the dignity of duty, completely, and without exception.

Sen. Michael K. Garrett @michaelgarrett.bsky.social · 25/05/2026
He trusted us with it. So let’s be worthy of that trust. Let’s roll up our sleeves and lean into the democratic process they bled to protect, and let’s bring every single citizen into it, because this country does not belong to a faction, or a party, or a man. It belongs to all of us.

A teenager from a small town, barely old enough to vote, gave everything he had so that you and I, people he never met, people who would argue with him at every turn, could walk into a voting booth and shape the future with our own hands. He didn’t die for an outcome. He died for the choice.

The right of an ordinary people to sit down together and decide, for themselves, what kind of nation they will be. Think about how staggering that is.
100
Sen. Michael K. Garrett @michaelgarrett.bsky.social · 25/05/2026
Because freedom was never the whole of what they died for. Freedom is the floor, not the ceiling. What they truly purchased with their lives was something rarer and more sacred, the freedom to choose.

On Memorial Day we pause to remember the fallen. And we honor all who have served, and all who serve still. America owes them a debt we can never fully repay. But here is what I believe: the truest way to honor a sacrifice is not to pause. It is to act.
100
Sen. Michael K. Garrett @michaelgarrett.bsky.social · 25/05/2026
We will not let them drown out the quiet, staggering sacrifice of the people who actually served. The ones who came home with empty sleeves and emptier nights. The ones who came home different. The ones who never came home at all.

Yes, there are those today who would turn the uniform into a costume for the culture war, who would rather shout into a microphone about wokeness than sit in silence with a grieving family, who mistake volume for strength and a flag pin for service. Let them shout.

Even the neighbor who disagreed. Even the stranger they’d never meet. Even the Americans not yet born, who will never know their names. Set their sacrifice beside the noise of this moment, and the noise shrinks to nothing.

Sen. Michael K. Garrett @michaelgarrett.bsky.social · 25/05/2026
The men and women who wore the uniform did their part to close that gap. Not for a party. Not for a president. Not for whoever happened to be standing in the Pentagon on a given Tuesday. They served the country itself, and everyone in it.

That is the heart of it. America has never been a finished thing. She was born as a promise, to form a more perfect union, and every generation since has been handed the same unfinished work: to close the distance between what she promises and what she actually is.

Sen. Michael K. Garrett @michaelgarrett.bsky.social · 25/05/2026
Americans have stepped forward, raised their right hand, and offered everything they had to a country that promised to be better than it was.

Today we carry it with them. From the muskets at Lexington to the trenches of the Argonne, from the beaches of Normandy to the mountains of Korea, the jungles of Vietnam, the deserts of Iraq and the valleys of Afghanistan…

There is a moment, somewhere in this country every single day, when a flag is folded thirteen times into a tight triangle and placed into the hands of a mother, a widow, a child too young to understand why everyone is crying. They will carry that weight for the rest of their lives.

That is not a policy disagreement. That is a loss of soul. It is time to go. And to every parent, every teacher, every kid who has ever been told their voice does not matter: Show up anyway. Write the letter anyway. Knock on the door anyway. The future is yours. Push.

Virginia Foxx: You are not worthy of the office you hold. You were a teacher once. You stood in front of students and asked them to use their minds. Somewhere between that classroom & the Capitol, you forgot. A child wrote you a letter. The teacher in you wrote back to call his teachers liars.

Sen. Michael K. Garrett @michaelgarrett.bsky.social · 12/05/2026
To this student: thank you. You did exactly what democracy asks of you. Keep writing. Keep asking. Keep showing up. There are so many of us out here who think your voice is one of the most important sounds in this country right now.

The teachers my mother served beside. The teachers who taught me. The teachers who teach Jack and Charlotte. The teachers who taught her once, a long time ago, before she forgot what the work was for.

A full-time crusader against the "indoctrination" of American children, by which she means the public school teachers who pour themselves into kids who are not their own.

Sen. Michael K. Garrett @michaelgarrett.bsky.social · 12/05/2026
You hold it open. You kneel down. You answer. That is the job. That is the whole job. And this is not a one-time mistake. This is who Virginia Foxx has been for years.

Sen. Michael K. Garrett @michaelgarrett.bsky.social · 12/05/2026
We are temporary custodians of these seats. We do not own them. They belong to the people. They belong to the kids in our classrooms. They belong to the boy who put a stamp on an envelope and trusted democracy to answer back. You do not slam the door on a child reaching for democracy.

Sen. Michael K. Garrett @michaelgarrett.bsky.social · 12/05/2026
How sad that she does not see him, the boy who wrote the letter and trusted that someone on the other end was worthy of his question. I think about my own kids. I think about Jack opening an envelope like that one. I think about Charlotte's face if she ever read those words about her teachers.
101
Sen. Michael K. Garrett @michaelgarrett.bsky.social · 12/05/2026
Those teachers are going to read this letter at their kitchen tables tonight. And a member of Congress is going to tell them, in the official correspondence of the United States government, that they are propagandists. How sad. How sad that she does not see them.
101
Sen. Michael K. Garrett @michaelgarrett.bsky.social · 12/05/2026
I think about the teachers in this state. The ones who get to school before the sun is up. The ones who buy crayons with their own money. The ones who write the assignment that says your voice matters, go use it.
101
Sen. Michael K. Garrett @michaelgarrett.bsky.social · 12/05/2026
And a member of Congress used that moment, that opening, that act of trust, to mock him. To mock his teachers. To pour cynicism into a child like a glass of water.
101
Sen. Michael K. Garrett @michaelgarrett.bsky.social · 12/05/2026
He showed up. He took the assignment seriously. He believed his teacher. He believed in the idea that his voice, a kid's voice, could matter to the country he is being asked to one day inherit.
