A wilderness adventurer, mountaineer, and navigator, I've explored places where nobody in recorded history had gone before—and nearly got killed over a half-dozen times in the process. michaelcooperadventurer.com.

Two days before I was due to present at the Sisters Festival of Books, I sprained my back. The Festival (staged by Paulina Springs Books in Sisters, Ore.) gave each participating author five minutes to introduce their book before moving to their table to sign copies. Here’s how my turn went down.

On July 22 I had to evacuate my home in the face of the fast-approaching Akawa Butte Fire. Undeterred, that same evening I presented a slideshow of my desert expeditions to an audience at the REI store in Tualatin, Oregon. Here's how Chat GPT hilariously depicts my stint as a refugee performer:
The AI-generated image hilariously depicts a smiling man presenting a slideshow about the Desert Southwest to an oblivious, applauding audience inside a sporting goods store, while a person in the image's background trains a fire hose on a raging fire consuming a nearby inside corner of the store.

Eleven years after his death, I still mourn the loss of my mountaineering buddy Ed Lovegren (L in photo, me on R). It was very special to me when his daughter Nancy gave me on Sunday a piton Ed had scratched his name on. Holding that piton in my hand makes me tear up. I will always treasure it.
All I’ve had to remember my mountaineering buddy Ed Lovegren by are photos of our sixteen climbs together, including this cherished selfie of us on the windy summit of Diamond Peak in 2005 (that’s Ed on the left). I loved him like a brother. So it was very special to me that I got to meet his daughter Nancy at a talk about my wilderness adventures that I presented at the REI store in Eugene, Oregon, last Sunday. Nancy had heard many stories while growing up about her dad’s climbing pal “Coop,” including that of the Diamond Peak climb, which was Ed’s last. At the end of the REI event, she gave me a small bag containing keepsakes of Ed. I couldn’t bring myself to open it until hours later. Inside was a piton Ed had scratched his name on. Holding that piton in my hand now, knowing Ed had often held it in his while doing what we loved best, makes me cry. I will always treasure that piton.

At a Barnes & Noble where I was signing copies of my memoir Miscalculated Risks, an 8yo boy listened to me recount the wild life I led over 40 yrs ago living in a remote jungle in Mexico. When I described the primitive shelter I called home, he looked up at me and asked, “Do you still live there?” 🤣
Pictured: The primitive shelter Michael Cooper called home while living in a remote Mexican jungle among the area's Indigenous people. The "palapa" had stick walls, a thatched palm roof and dirt floor, and no plumbing or electricity. The nearby El Tuito River provided water for drinking and bathing. The story behind Michael's nearly fatal adventure in the jungle is recounted in his bestselling, multi-award-winning memoir Miscalculated Risks: Attacked, Crippled, Paralyzed, Drowning, Unconscious and Freezing in The Wild (Just Not All at Once).

In 1997 I suffered a crippling accident while skiing in the Mount Jefferson Wilderness during a snowstorm. The National Ski Patrol hauled me out of the wilderness in the dark on a sled. 29 yrs later my present-day friend Dave Haake realized he was one of the anonymous NSP volunteers who'd saved me.
On March 27, 1997, I suffered a crippling accident while skiing cross-country in Oregon’s Mount Jefferson Wilderness. With the cartilage and medial collateral ligament in my knee ruptured, I faced a powerful snowstorm hammering the backcountry. I had no tent to shelter me nor a shovel with which to dig a snow cave. In the frigid dark that evening, three men from the National Ski Patrol found me and hauled me out of the wilderness on a modular sled. I didn’t see their faces or get their names. Twenty-nine years later, my friend Dave Haake—whom my wife and I had been regularly hiring for carpentry work for the past two decades—read the chapter in my outdoors-adventure memoir Miscalculated Risks recounting my harrowing struggle for survival and ensuing rescue. To his (and my) astonishment, Dave realized he was one of the anonymous NSP volunteers who had hauled me out of the wilderness twenty-nine years ago. It’s a small world.
