Careful what you ask for. Our October snow—a welcome alternative to fires—hit so early that the trees weren't ready. I've seen more non-fire tree destruction the last few days than ever. Parks in town look like war zones. These aren't even the biggest skull-crushing branches I came across . . .

Sure, after a relatively snowless last winter, watching parts of my hometown burn to the ground in August, and a fire watch just two days ago, I'll take an early October snow . . .

It's a mansion in town where I walk my dog. It was owned by Nelson Story, who was the historical basis for McMurtry's Lonesome Dove. He did the first cattle drives from Texas to Montana, so everything around here is named after him. I thought I had some better pics, but this is all I have:

The flowers at Story Mansion don't seem to know it's October. #FlowerReport

Postcards from The Road: The wild turkeys were in full force this last week, near the center of the U.S., Black Hills region. A little arrogant, considering it's getting close to Thanksgiving . . .

Thank you, rain, for clearing out the smoke and keeping the fire threat down in my area of the world . . .

You can barely see the Bridgers behind the smoke coming from the fires incinerating my hometown of Spokane, Washington, four hundred miles away. This mountain range is almost 10k feet high, but you can't tell it is sizeable with all the haze.

Postcards from The Road. One bald eagle and one grizzly, deep in Yellowstone last weekend. Also pictured: first trout of 2026!

Went with a simple pumpkin design this year. Roasting seeds today and handing out some candy later with The Shining playing in the background. Haven't picked a costume yet but I have all day. Happy Halloween everyone!

Is it necessary to advertise this? Glad I went to breakfast by myself this morning. Geez. 😂

If one encounters a Boneyard cocktail lounge on one’s travels, one must stop. And if one stops, one must of course order the “Hello, Clarice,” whether one is a mixed drink drinker or not.

It was a rare occurrence when someone would beat me to the beach in the early morning hours, despite a surrounding metro area of ~3 million people (greater metro ~18 mil). But, looking back, the evidence was there in the form of tire tracks and footprints. Huntington Beach, California, Oct. 3, 2003:

Postcards from The Road: some choppy water at Gull Point, Lake Yellowstone. On the far side of the lake to the right is the famous yellow Lake Hotel. I always feel like I'm walking into the Overlook when I step in there. It's trapped in time.

I did! You're right, lots of things I didn't expect to find there. I got Buck Owens, Chuck Mangione, & Jonathan Winters (99 cents!) in vinyl, & then this sweet Bob Wills hookup. Dude is like an encyclopedia. Whenever I mention these at any other record shop I usually get the glazed-over eyes look.

One of the great scores of our weekend road trip, besides excellent books and beer, is my first pair of SPAM socks. "You think anybody wants a roundhouse kick to the face while I'm wearing these bad boys? Forget about it." Rex. 😂

A few more rando pics from the @sgj.bsky.social Missoula event. Nice to see bookseller friends Mara and Bryn from Fact & Fiction, and of course it wouldn't be Montana without a little a.m. snow. Plus, check out all the sweet Weasel Plume hookups . . .

You know it’s an amazing day in Montana when they open the big garage-style doors at the brewery. You could drive a couple semis through these doors. 50 degrees, crisp, clean Rocky Mountain air, things are just about perfect . . .

“Life should not be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a pretty and well-preserved body, but rather to skid in broadside in a cloud of smoke, thoroughly used up, totally worn out, and loudly proclaiming ‘Wow! What a Ride!’” —Hunter S. Thompson
