The number of times a year I get a bill where the pay online option involves more work than just writing out a check and putting a stamp on the reply envelope is too damn high.

The interesting part of this article for me was the disabled community wasn't big enough to keep the bar economically viable and during a 3 1/2 conversation, the remaining owner shared how hard it was to keep the lights on and she was met with hostility and brought to tears. Is that part not true?

SWEs are still in such denial about AI that they're *still* not seriously discussing forming a union to reject AI while they still have some leverage. have we learned nothing from the dockworkers and the mathematicians?

I've worked inside of datacenters, been in charge of datacenters, been in planning meetings to build new datacenters and I cannot parse a single thing this web site believes about datacenters. Your rallying cry is datacenters. Datacenters. Okay.

So, I've worked in grid research. They're different problems. For EVs, distribution has to be built up, but doing it effectively requires being able to forecast which homes will buy EVs; the utility doesn't get to choose. OTOH data centers try to locate where the conditions are already favorable.

if you think people posting AI slop PRs to github is bad, wait until you see all of the issues/feature requests people post that 5 minutes with an AI tool could solve

datacenters are misunderstood. maybe if the general public could spend some time in these loud, dark, cold, cavernous rooms on big campuses with endlessly long rows of computers that look nothing like the computers they have ever interacted with and

Starbucks CEO comp: $95 million divided by number of Starbucks employees 381,000 equals... $249. Starbucks employees would make less than an additional dollar a day if you eliminated the CEO and distributed their pay. A barista already takes home most of the value per cup of coffee they make.

oh, that's way worse IMO I use optional and labeled arguments all the fucking time and feel like I have an arm tied behind my back when I have to use a language without them
000
Michael Bacarella @michael.bacarella.com · 11/05/2026
Yes, though the convention in OCaml if you use optional arguments is to name all of them (required and optional) instead of relying on positions and add a final unit argument so you have a way of closing out the curried forms.

In the US your GP sees the letter from your foreign psychiatrist listing your maintenance meds and says well I'm not a psychiatrist but I trust the letter, I'll re-up you until you find one. In the UK the NHS says lol cool letter, the answer is no. Wait for the psych. Try not to die.

The fact that you *will* become suicidal if forced to go off your psyche meds does not mean they will write you prescriptions to continue taking the psyche meds you were on in America without first seeing the NHS psychiatrist. Waitlist: 12+ months. You can ask my (now) ex-wife how she knows.

the American experience in Britain is actually more like "what do you mean it's a one year wait to see a psychiatrist to transfer my prescriptions over? I'm suicidal now!"

though tbh the really great leftist Khmer Rouge intellectuals were more of an oral tradition, since under their literary criticism framework "owns a book" and "wears glasses" were both capital offenses punishable by being beaten to death with a shovel in a rice paddy

A man of your distinction shouldn't be working with such trash. Throw that table away and consider taking a closet door off its hinges and putting it up on some cinder blocks instead. At least then you'd have honest materials and honest intentions.
