Erich von Daniken. Never read a word by him but the books were everywhere in the early to mid 1970s. Didn’t even realize he died this year.

Is this supposed to encourage/cheer the sentient beings among us? One in four?

I can’t bring myself to listen to him in the YouTube clip above, but that did occur to me.

It is good news; nevertheless a head scratcher that they have to set up ‘diversionary feeding stations’ to encourage upstanding citizens to obey the law.

You may have seen reports of a recent survey, Katherine, which revealed shocking numbers of parents stalking their teenage/young adult children. Proud to say it never occurred to me to do it.

Brilliant news. Those north Cumbrian game keepers must be losing their edge.

Owen, haven’t you had black turnstone in Dublin 🤔😉😀?

#donegalbirding There’s been an outbreak of old-school grumpiness on the county WhatsApp group over the use of Merlin. I remember how it alerted me (in Italy) to the presence of the unfamiliar Western Bonelli’s Warbler, leading to a sighting I would certainly otherwise have missed. It’s not all bad.

#donegalbirding Another welcome American visitor in the form of a semipalmated sandpiper at Blanket Nook, found today by the non-stop Donegal bird-finder general @delboydonegal.bsky.social

#donegalbirding Nice influx of American waders this autumn. Since the Pectoral Sandpiper out west, @delboydonegal.bsky.social has been turning them up on his patch. Baird’s Sandpiper has been around a few weeks and now an American Golden Plover at Inch.

more or less successfully according to innate ability. Now AI is being rammed down their throats as the answer to everything by unscrupulous techno-fascists, with the collusion of supine politicians. And then we blame the young people themselves.

The quoted article makes a much too simple and singular connection between the problem and smartphone use (they existed back in 2018). Back in my working life in HE we were expected to encourage generic critical thinking as well as subject-specific skills and students did that,

Was about to say this. Politicians always claim there’s a whole forest of magic savings trees. Reform’s £80bn is just the latest iteration of this nonsense.

Absolutely; plenty of reasons to get rid before ever the C4 news piece aired. His ‘supervision’ arrangements alone are surely misconduct.

Was at this, Joy Division supporting the Buzzcocks at the Apollo, Manchester, 27/10/79. Had just been to see Liverpool beat City 4-0 at Maine Road, so quite a day. m.youtube.com/watch?v=CusF...

If you were Dick Graham I would offer a facetious list starting something like (1) London Symphony Orchestra, (2) Hallé Orchestra, (3) Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra, (4) New York Philharmonic Orchestra, etc etc. Number 4 is true, by the way. Went to a couple of their gigs years back.

This list would give people a VERY misleading idea of your music tastes and, in my opinion, your personality (that is a compliment 😂).

Perhaps I’m being slow here. I had never heard this name two weeks ago. Am I right that he’s the man who brought Cofnas to Gent?

I’m not really following what’s going on here. I understand a Tory MP has used the expression ‘Yookay’ as a pejorative. Can someone explain to me what the problem is in calling the UK the UK?

Lovely stuff, Mark. Fitter & Richardson was my first field guide. It came with the dust jacket illustrated here, which sadly fell apart many years ago.

Guys, Cofnas is clearly trying to trigger responses on here and the other site to build a victim narrative he needs for a successful career around Reform or Restore

Well, that’s one way of dealing with the problem of having an awkward famous son. I dare say some of the more conservative early 20th century Irish nationalists would have declared the problem with Connolly was that ‘he’s Scottish really’.

I noticed on a @hopenothate.org.uk list of GB news advertisers the Thomas Paine Hotel (in Thetford). Sometimes feels like the entire UK is through the looking glass.

Sure. It was, frankly, quite obvious to me as soon as I saw some concrete examples. But better people than I tried to defend it, wrongly. And none of it justifies in any way the ensuing carnival of reaction.

Not disagreeing, Chris, but Cambridge (and LJMU and Glasgow) are to blame for decisions that they (albeit subconsciously) thought fulfilled their diversity mission rather than do the hard yards to address the institutional problem but that don’t offer instant and measurable results.

We are indeed through the looking glass … while the birthplace of Thomas Paine witnesses mob attacks on immigrant homes, a hotel in Thetford named after him is advertising on GB ‘news’. @hopenothate.org.uk

Bad enough that the horrific attacks are taking place in the birthplace of Thomas Paine, but for a hotel named after him to be advertising on that channel. I despair.
