Of all the threats to life on Earth, the danger that music majors won’t know about L’homme armé masses surely ranks among the highest

rather unfortunately one of the authors of this report has already told me where I stand on this

It’s one of the most ridiculous methodological holes, too. You don’t know what the original program was so how can you analyze how it changed!!!

Botstein out fully at Bard: “Professor Botstein informed Bard earlier today that he is resigning immediately from all Bard-affiliated positions, including his professorship and roles with The Orchestra Now and other music programs.”

first time I spent a week of my medieval music unit running a large roleplaying game and then the highest average grade on the medieval exam of any section I've taught! (it was basically the same exam format as previous iterations.)

I’ve started introducing assignments by explaining exactly what the learning goals are (including “will help you ace the test” for lower-division classes) because I thought it was obvious but it really is not

Thanks, that’s informative! The witches didn’t read well at all from upstairs IMO—whole thing is dark and low contrast.

Oof. Where were you sitting? Is it any better up close, if you were? I’m just wondering what other people saw that I (and my friend) absolutely didn’t.

I’m reading some more reviews and am SO perplexed. I was sitting in the balcony and wonder if the production didn’t suit the large space and there was more to see up close?

I once had a TA who was a tubist, he carried around a gallon milk jug full of water and his method to make students pay attention was to stare at them very intensely. This was his main pedagogical skill when teaching medieval music. He’s now in a Marine band.

“Being trapped inside a tuba for two hours” is an instant classic and I say this as someone who works with tubas and tubists on a regular basis, thank you @bilgeebiri.bsky.social

I love it when a critic takes care with their words
I’m surprised to hear you say that it didn’t disappoint, because you describe the movie as “tortuous” and “like being trapped inside a tuba for two hours.”
B.E.: Disappointment and dislike are two very different things.

You might say “Macbeth was revised after Luisa Miller was composed” but I say that revision is early Verdi wearing a hat and the hat is mostly annoying little ballets

I do think the director has been good elsewhere and something went very wrong here, maybe starting when she had to work with another’s Konzept

Bafflingly terrible production. Some scenes don’t appear to have been rehearsed We can and should do better than this!!!!!

Lise miscast, production making me long for the genius of Bartlett Sher, score reminding me to reinstate my rule of not fucking with Verdi operas composed before Luisa Miller

Same. I also heard tell of some waaaaay more than $120/night escapades when the SEC marching band budget was involved
020
Micaela Baranello @micaelab.bsky.social · 02/10/2026
(That limit was at my previous job so a few years ago but I somehow doubt it’s gone up)
010
Micaela Baranello @micaelab.bsky.social · 02/10/2026
This is kind and you’re being a good colleague but you should not have to do this!! I have some funding but I look at the $120/night hotel limit and think “is the provost really staying within that budget when *they* have to go to New Orleans?”

How else are you going to sell $200 PDFs about managing a department in a time of turmoil I know how much they cost because a previous chair who always said we have no money for research travel kept buying them

Is it Watermark? My previous job had that set up so it would erase any articles without an impact factor entered and no musicology journals have those so I straight up made them up so the report wouldn’t delete stuff and no one noticed or cared

I wish I could wear men's sizes because tweed is rarer for women! but I'm not tall enough and they're really tricky to alter

Micaela Baranello @micaelab.bsky.social · 30/09/2026
have to note that blazers are a VERY practical thing to thrift: easy to try on, plentiful stock from the corporate people who are seemingly always donating things, less likely to show wear than shirts or pants, way to save a lot of money because they are expensive

Good point. I know this series was in the planning for absolute eons but when it arrived it wasn’t suited for where curricula are going.
030
Micaela Baranello @micaelab.bsky.social · 30/09/2026
The only one I’ve actually taught with is the 20th c and I also liked it a lot. I wish there was a way to use the series in a modular way, there are lots of good chapters for a non-chron course but I can’t ask students to buy all the books
110
Micaela Baranello @micaelab.bsky.social · 30/09/2026
if the book is what I think it is, I worked on the seventeenth-century volume in the series and yeah, to say the least they don't go for the obvious options
