Anon: There are some people who think Tenna would love Spamton less now that he's been turned into a puppet and that makes me sad because then what was the whole point of 'defying the prophecy' anyway? Not to mention that we've seen proof that he knows that it was him, but his guilt and pride clouded his mind and he denied all of it. God forbid the fans want them to have a happy ending right??

OP: Ok, you almost had a point here, but then you ruined it by saying "pride".

I swear to god, if I see one more person acting like Tenna experiencing standard stages of grief (denial and anger) are indicative of him being too prideful/conceited/whatever to admit fault or be confronted with it, I'm going to start killing. Have people seriously never heard of the stages of grief or even considered applying that framework to Tenna, even though, from his perspective, Spamton has been missing for a decade? When a person loses a loved one, even if neither of them had any control of the situation, the person may feel anger towards the loved one, like "why did you leave me?"; it's not rational, but it's a common feeling for someone who is grieving.

Tenna also fully believes that he's to blame for something terrible happening to Spamton. He doesn't know what it is, because as far as he knows, Spamton got that call, panicked, and ran way, never to be seen again. From the information he has, it's plausible that Spamton could've died, especially when he's been gone for 10 years. He needs to tell himself that Spamton chose to abandon him as a coping mechanism, because it's the only way he can assure himself that Spamton is still alive. He would rather believe that Spamton is alive, but is a scammer that hates him, than believe that Spamton is dead, but was completely honest and loved him until the end. Tenna's denial about what happened exists specifically to cope with Spamton's absence. Once they're reunited again, when Tenna isn't going through a crisis and can fully process that Spamton is back, he's gonna drop the denial, because he doesn't need it anymore.

I've already talked about why Tenna reacted to Spamton the way that he did in this post (and in some other ones), and I'll copy and paste the relevant paragraph here:

By the time the cutscene occurred, he had spent a decade silently carrying the trauma, guilt and grief around causing something terrible to happen to Spamton, he became disused in the Light World and was at risk of getting thrown away and dying, all his employees were leaving him, and he was failing to fulfill the deal he had made (keeping the Lightners busy until the Knight showed up), as the Lightners ran away and he lost track of them. Everything around him was falling apart and he was hanging on by a thread, so when Spamton just suddenly appeared out of nowhere (while looking the way that he does), Tenna could not have handled the emotional weight of that reunion. When he heard a familiar voice and saw a familiar face, he quickly went into denial, sprayed Spamton with foam and ran away (but, importantly, he took their child with him, so Spamton's presence in the cutscene ensures that Tenna keeps the pipis and it doesn't get abandoned or destroyed).

Spamton suddenly reappearing a decade later, while clearly looking different and, as we know from Sweet Cap'n Cakes noting his "off-key" smell, being visibly affected by his homelessness, is a confirmation that something bad did happen to him. Add to that Spamton saying "you really do care!!!" as though that's a revelation to him. Of course Tenna wasn't able to handle the implications of all that while he's already going through a crisis, so he went into denial and ran away from that conversation. It had nothing to do with Spamton's attractiveness, or with Tenna being "too prideful" or whatever, and everything to do with the timing of Spamton's reappearance (especially when Spamton has always been odd-looking because of his long nose, which Tenna loves, and his achondroplasia/dwarfism).

And the idea of Tenna, as devoted as he is to Spamton, loving him less because he looks weirder than he used to, also just makes no sense for his character or for Deltarune as a whole. The idea of him suddenly not loving his partner anymore or loving him less just because he isn't pretty enough would be completely out of place in a story that's all about hope. Spamton and Tenna are two autistic guys who struggle to fit in and connect with others, and in each other they finally found someone who loves them for who they are, so they developed a deep mutual devotion; they're not gonna drop that over something so superficial. Their reunion isn't gonna be a "came back wrong", it's gonna be an "I'm glad you came back".
