The Alchemist collections.artsmia.org/art/9645
It was typical in depictions of alchemists to include a scholar seated at a lectern. In this print, Brueghel inserts a figure on the right side that gestures out at the scene in front of him and draws the viewer's attention to the foolish behavior in his midst. The alchemist works in his makeshift lab as he tries to discover the philosopher's stone, a material that will turn base metals into gold and silver. He is assisted in his pursuits by a fool, who is shown squeezing air from a bellows onto coals in a brazier. The alchemist's wife sits behind the fool and displays her empty purse, a sign that her husband has squandered all that they had in his quest for the philosopher's stone. Through the window we see the eventual outcome of the alchemist's folly as he and his family are welcomed at the poorhouse.

Untitled (Lake Superior Landscape) collections.artsmia.org/art/127478
abstract landscape with high horizon line; orange sky; blue band (water?) at horizon line; irregular rock formations in tan, orange, purple, blue, black and green
Among the final works Morrison created during his six-decade career, this boldly colored, abstract landscape encapsulates the artist’s creative philosophy and aesthetic vision. From his reliance on Surrealist-inspired automatic drawing techniques and expressive use of color, to the prominent horizon line motif and the theme of Lake Superior as both a symbol and source of spiritual knowledge, this drawing operates as a sort of visual and aesthetic manifesto, and fitting homage to Morrison’s distinguished career.

View of the Chateau of Versailles Showing the Chapel collections.artsmia.org/art/43359
The chapel at Versailles was begun toward the end of Louis XIV's massive construction effort and completed in 1710, just five years before the king's death. Jacques Rigaud, an accomplished illustrator and engraver of city and palace views, animated his architectural prints by populating the foregrounds with images of polite society. Here in the plaza in front of the chateau he depicts fashionable ladies and gentleman promenading and conversing, dogs running about, and two high-ranking visitors arriving in sedan chairs, carried by servants. Such bustling activity at the palace was quite common, as an estimated 1,000 courtiers kept rooms-pied-à-terres-in the chateau, accompanied by some 4,000 attendants. In addition, the staterooms and gardens at Versailles were open to the public, accessible to anyone in proper attire.

The Artist's Mother: Head Only, Full Face collections.artsmia.org/art/121477
head of elderly woman with large white headdress covering hair and ears; pensively looking downward; portion at L seems to be darker compared to grayish tone of other inking
Rembrandt was living at home in Leiden, Holland, when he sat down to etch in front of an easily accessible model, his 60-year-old mother. Old, lined faces would be a lifelong motif for him, but it’s hard to imagine one etched with more delicacy or penetration. The air of introspection may owe to the Dutch tradition of picturing aged people as pious and pondering salvation. When plans to extend the torso didn’t work out, Rembrandt, then age 22, did the unthinkable and severed the plate under his mother’s chin. He was nonetheless proud of the print, dating and signing it as a finished work. His mother is the only verifiable family member he recorded. Rembrandt named his three daughters (two died young) Cornelia, after her.

Fêtes (Celebrations) collections.artsmia.org/art/195
In 1926, Calder moved from New York to Paris, where he met many of the leading members of the European avant-garde, including Hayter, who would found the experimental print workshop Atelier 17 the following year. Calder's interest in printmaking began in earnest during this time, and though he returned permanently to America in 1933, his fascination with modernism and experimental art forms continued throughout his lifetime. Fêtes is a prose poem by French author Jacques Prévert honoring Calder's remarkable achievements as a modern artist. Prévert explained that Calder is a "sorcerer…of happiness," one whose art is a "pleasure of eyes and heart." Prévert was struck by Calder's seemingly effortless process, in which spontaneity, originality, and pure freedom of expression made him unclassifiable. In preparing the illustrations for this project, Calder devised an unconventional technique for printing the brilliantly colored aquatints that accompany Prévert's text. Calder first made a preliminary drawing in color, and then cut sheet metal that had been prepared in aquatint to match the drawing. The various metal forms served as printing surfaces, which were laid out on a press and colors applied. The metal plates were then run through the press, transferring the color to the paper, while simultaneously embossing the sheet.

Miren que grabes! collections.artsmia.org/art/80373
binding: mottled calf, gilt tooled with a green panel on spine lettered: CAPRICH DE GOYA; endpapers: contemporary Spanish marbled papers
Francisco Goya’s series Los Caprichos contains layers of meaning that even today challenge the modern viewer. Mia’s copy is a rare presentation proof containing early printings of all eighty images. In the first half, Goya explored themes of superstition, sensuality, greed, and violence with scenes set in Spanish brothels, salons, and prisons. The second half is given over to fantastic images from the artist’s dreams and nightmares. Even though Goya tried to disguise his attacks on Spanish society, he withdrew the set from sale because he had been reported to the Inquisition, a tribunal that ruled with lethal authority.
