After fighting in World War II, William Daley attended the Massachusetts School of Art on the G.I. Bill, where he studied with Charles Abbot. Daley graduated in 1950 and went on to earn a master's degree at Columbia University Teachers College in New York. In 1954 he took a teaching position at SUNY (State University of New York) at New Paltz and switched from throwing vessels on a wheel to building them from slabs of clay shaped over molds. Prior Oval exemplifies Daley's slab-building technique, and features intersecting and overlapping geometric shapes that create relationships between negative and positive, and interior and exterior, space. The title Prior Oval evokes the conceptual beginning of the vessel without reference to function. Daley describes himself as a traditional potter, and notes that while pots are useful, they also have been more than just utilitarian for quite some time.

During the Baroque era, a lady and her lady-in-waiting could spend hours at the dressing table with soaps, creams, perfumes, brushes, pins, etc. This manner of ceremonial grooming originated in the French court, where the word "toilette" developed from "toile," or cloth, which covered the table. As the ceremony grew more elaborate, so too did the dressing table service that housed these beauty secrets. Surviving correspondence from silversmith himself identifies the elements of this service have been identified as follows: a rectangular mirror; an oval basin; two 'comb boxes,' one featuring Venus and Adonis, one with the Death of Adonis; two powder boxes, one with Phaeton in his chariot, the other with Phaeton falling to Earth; a cylindrical patch box with Hercules on its cover; two 'sweet-water bottles' for perfume; a rectangular pin-cushion; two 'jessemy boxes,' for jasmine oil; and two brushes (later additions). The figural plaquettes depict scenes from Ovid's Metamorphoses. This set once belonged in the collection of financier and art collector J. P. Morgan. Among the very few services of this type, quality, and completeness, one can be found in the Devonshire Collection at Chatsworth in England, and one by the same maker is at the Victoria and Albert Museum in London.

Marrow spoons were commonly used by European diners in the eighteenth century for the easy removal of marrow from the bone. They were often made of silver, with a long, thin bowl. Many, such as the present, were double-ended. Hester Bateman—the maker of the larger spoon—was the most prolific female silversmith of her age. During her thirty- year career after she took over her late husband’s workshop in 1760, her silver would have been found in nearly every middle-class household in London.

Smaller tables are concealed within larger ones in this nest of tables, and can be pulled out at a moment’s notice. The tables are primarily made of tubular steel, a highly innovative material at the time and easier to bend than wood. Originally intended as stools, these tables were a favorite design of Breuer’s: simple, functional, space-saving, and inexpensive.

This model illustrates in three dimensions both the complexity of Wright's design and its complete engagement with the site. (Wright always favored a building into a hill rather than on top of it.) The main approach to the Francis W. Little house was on the inland side. The hallway on view in this gallery was situated on the Lake Minnetonka side. An adjoining hallway with small square windows connected it to the master bedroom on the far right end of the house. At the opposite end was the large living and music room pavilion (now at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York).

In 1954, Stanislav Libenský and Jaroslava Brychtová began working together in the Czech glassmaking center of Železný Brod. In 1963, the partners married in Prague. During their long collaboration they developed the mold-melting technique that would allow them to create their distinctive abstract style of art glass. This style and technique made Libenský and Brychtová the most internationally influential of the Czech artists who worked behind the Iron Curtain from roughly the 1950s to the 1980s. Fundamental to the artists' work is a conceptual and metaphysical approach, related to Czech cubism and philosophy. Light is the central idea, representing the fourth dimension, a notion they termed "light-space". This light-space is represented by the intentional definition, direction and manipulation of light in their works, through the use of prisms, lenses, and rough textured planes.

Henry Karlsson, the master glassblower at Orrefors, described the remarkably thin-stemmed Tulip vases as “the most difficult...and most exciting thing I ever did.” Sizes and shapes varied, but the tendency was toward ever more exaggerated stem length. Production of the series continued until 1981.
