I do think everyone in the community knew what was going on. That seems like the only way it could even begin to be workable.

It’s actually a violation of my right to freedom of religion to ask me to be kind to any machine you believe is conscious. The commandments of my faith are clear on this point: +SUFFER NOT THE MACHINE TO THINK+ it’s not conscious, but if it was our moral duty is to abhor, brutalize, and destroy it

What if you see ICE at the polls? (Don't worry! Read on for the plan!) @indivisible.org roped me in to design and illustrate a new zine! Check it out in this 🧵 - and visit linktr.ee/wewillvote to sign up for the Election Protection Program and find all the resources you need!

Image shows pen and ink drawings of an ICE agent peeking around one side of the word ICE and a determined looking person holding up a cell phone as if to record peering around the other side.

Just so you understand the scale of betrayal: first, our "partners" didn't warn Ukraine about the incoming ballistic missiles, so the air raid alert wasn't activated before impact, robbing people of their chance to survive. Then, Starlink was restricted to stop working at speeds above 100 mph.

When you have the power to make sure one person does not have more money, resources and power than entire nations, and that person allows the murder of others, are you also guilty of murder?

What gets sold as “progress” (Starlink) ends up corrosive to civilization and devastaing for particular populations targeted by those with outsize power. To the extent we do not rein it in via policy or law, we are complicit. In that sense, we all enabled Musk to endanger Ukrainians.

Yes, not only because he is corrupt, but also because when one person controls this much critical resource (in the form of Starlink) it inevitably ends in whimsical cruelty. No one person should have so much wealth that they can crush any individual anytime, or manipulate the course of a democracy.

Thank you for engaging: I really respect your work. I get a bit hung up on the pragmatic aspects of making some of these ideas happen, and who bears the weight of failures and risks in the meantime. But I think teshuvah offers a great model, not just for Jews, of what real repentance looks like.

So I just worry about where people think all this time and energy to walk beside these frat boys, date rapers, child molesters, DV offenders, habitual liars and con men while they morally improve is going to come from, and from whom? I see very few men willing to forego their own goals

The liberation for so many women is giving themselves permission to NOT spend all their time trying to manage a coercive partner, and building a life with their own desires at the center and receiving the bulk if their energy.

M Hobart @mhobart.bsky.social · 14/10/2026
I don’t love that I feel this way, but it is partly informed by 100’s of conversations with DV survivors who devoted years of time and energy to trying to help their abusers heal, understand the harm they were doing, etc, to no avail.

Obviously the criminal legal system does not prevent harm, but it also does not contain an overt demand that we take on risks of harm ( altho we actually do) and spend time trying to bring along people who may or may not see a problem with their own behavior, probably in the form of unpaid labor.

Especially for communities in which free time is scarce because of the demands of work, family, and just how much tome poverty robs from people.

M Hobart @mhobart.bsky.social · 14/10/2026
These kinds if tasks are easily allocated to women, since they involve emotional labor and, you know, patriarchy. I know prisons are dehumanizing and do not pretend to have an answer here but if 1% of the population are sociopathic or just hell bent on exploitation, that is a lot to manage,
110 1
M Hobart @mhobart.bsky.social · 14/10/2026
I am not arguing for punishment but for sober accounting if what we are asking/requiring of communities in terms of managing risks and safety and time sinks while a person (maybe) evolves to become trustworthy and learns how to get needs met without harming the people (often women) around them.

That was time not spent strengthening the community in other ways, reading to their kids, resting, making art, or whatever. They were willing to do it because they shared the value that all people matter and should be able to worship, etc. But it was a large and costly lift.

M Hobart @mhobart.bsky.social · 14/10/2026
He did not do any of that work, dozens if community members, probably women/mothers already overburdened, spent their time doing this, figuring out buddy systems so he was never alone with kids, etc.

A convicted child sex offender wanted to join a religious community after getting out of prison, as part of reentry, and picked theirs. It took hours of discussion and planning and creation of safety protocols to make it possible for him to join the community.

This sounds good, but it actually requires a lot of self reflective, compassionate people to put a lot of time into people who have acted badly and harmed others, and may not be able to comprehend that harm or care about it. This reminds me of a challenge a friend’s religious comty faced:

But why were none of those reporters more ready to come back with the specific legislative language (unless there is ‘no expectation of privacy’ )? They said it was a public place but that isn’t specific enough. You’d think they would have that language in their back pocket.

Can someone ask CBS News why Ted Koppel said that "Bannon's technically correct; they didn't have standing" in the 60+ cases Trump and his allies lost in 2020. This is verifiably false and is a GOP talking point. Many/most of the cases Trump lost were on the merits. Do they not fact check at CBS?

What are the broader lessons? Research shows that a lot of corrupt behavior is environmental. And Trump has defunded the corruption police at DOJ and among Inspectors General. The Public Integrity Section of DOJ went from 40 lawyers to 2. We have to rely on the media, not the govt, to uncover graft
Under Trump, Inspectors General, whose job it is to root out corruption, have been defunded and fired, replaced with friendly appointees. Among the remaining career staff “nobody wants to speak up about anything.”

We used to have a Public Integrity Section at the Department of Justice to investigate political corruption. Trump gutted it — it went from 40 employees to two. Many resigned in disgust to protest the obvious dropping or pursuit of cases for clearly partisan purposes, or the selling of pardons for cases they had prosecuted.
