Brought up Nick Drake, but then that led to his mom MOLLY Drake, the feminine urge to create in solitude, and music-making as documentation. It was my kind of conversation!

Didn’t get to go to Daisy Chain Fields, but I DID get to go to Yoko Only. Not only was it legit one of the best shows I’ve ever seen, but I also got to talk to Yuka Honda about it afterwards for @thetonearm.com

This newsletter by @nikostratis.com perfectly articulates the problem with AI music. I’m glad to see that The Tonearm was moved to share it.

It was great to chat with Liam Kazar, a dude with great values and stellar musical/songwriting talent who also happens to be a longtime member of Jeff Tweedy’s band.

Wrote this one with the kind editorial support of @erikadams.bsky.social and I’m pleased to have contributed to the discourse surrounding the music on this show in some way.

I sometimes worry that too many people think being a good critic means being a self-righteous dick about every little thing and I think far too many miss the point that you can't critique anything if you don't know how to love something.

The world could be such a nice place if we allowed it. It's all so goddamn unnecessary. There's no need for any of it. It's so beautiful here. It should be so cool to be alive

This was a really fun conversation to have. And Ben Jones spun around in his desk chair, arms to the sky, at the start and end of it, which felt celebratory and nice.

I think it's becoming clear that if you like indie creators, you're going to need to support them any way you can. And that doesn't mean money, just spreading worth of mouth can be powerful as well.

Don’t stop meaning making. Must keep pushing against. Righteous anger as fuel. Stories as hand holding. My small part. Much more for hands to do. righteousbabe.ffm.to/wryn-snake
I wrote Snake in the early summer of 2020. Human rights were at the center of the cultural mind in a different way than before. It feels eerily full circle now. We are still witnessing brutality on our phones. There is still a force that has grown and morphed, trying to take away the autonomy of so many: removing access to gender-affirming care, abortion rights, disability justice, Indigenous rights and the rights that protect those from racial + ethnic bias. This song stems from a righteous anger. A call to something older and deeper than the patriarchal systems that oppress us. It taps into my own personal experiences of not just systemic violence but the intimate + interpersonal kind. Having experienced assault in my past, this song was a way to transform my own pain into a call to action.

“I can’t wait for an answer before I get free.”
