On July 2, R/V Atlantis departed Woods Hole on a WHOI-@rcgssgrc.bsky.social mission to document two historic shipwrecks tied to polar explorers Sir Ernest Shackleton & Capt. Robert Falcon Scott. 📲Read about this historic research cruise—and follow us for updates! go.whoi.edu/heroic-age-research
A research vessel named Atlantis with a large crane is deploying a white and red submersible, labeled Alvin, into the ocean. The scene is set against a clear sky with a few clouds, and the water is slightly choppy. Several crew members are visible on deck, overseeing the operation.A large, historic sailing ship (Terra Nova) with multiple masts and sails is surrounded by vast, snowy ice formations. The ship's black hull contrasts with the icy white environment. In the background, figures stand on the ice, enhancing the sense of adventure and exploration.A historic ship named "Quest" is docked in icy waters. It has tall masts and is moored near rocky, snow-covered shores. The background features an expansive glacier with chunks of ice scattered across the sea. A small boat is tethered to the ship’s side.

An article posted by bsky.app/profile/anne... accused me of slighting an individual who has, over the years, made many disingenuous claims under guise of pseudonyms & recently undertaken a ‘speaking’ tour where attendees were charged AU$50. As the OP has blocked this account, I’m quoting here.

I have no intention to make any apology. Many contributors engage positively, Turner has never been one of those: Bannon-esque ‘flooding the zone’ with unsubstantiated opinions helps nothing.

The referenced article accuses me of some slight against Peter Turner. I wish to reply: Turner has, for many years, sought to pollute serious conversations concerning the loss of MH370. Most recently, I learned he had embarked on a speaking tour, charging attendees AU$50, I find that odious ⬇️

So, same reason holds for ROVs: -05 & -06 are not immediately ready to operate deep water ROVs. The Seaonics LARS are configured (docking heads, possibly winch/umbilical spec) for large geotech machines.

JL-M, ‘Mr Caption’, isn’t a reliable source. He’s simply guessing. As Ben says, A86-06 would be the more likely candidate to take up the search. However, to pick up as A86-05 left off requires 3x AUV & tech crew availability in Vung Tau. Note also, in its Vard handover state A86-06 is -05’s twin.

Yep, initially the AIS static voyage data showed PagoPago ETA 43 days but now reduced to 21 days. Assuming direct Fremantle to PaguPagu is a change of plan, we know of no clear reason why.

By coincidence than design. The vessel track doesn’t reflect what the AUVs are doing. The AUVs are ‘mowing the lawn’ on the seafloor tracing paths more or less parallel to the seventh arc. As A86-05 is repositioning between the AUV nav/progress checkpoints it is crossing through one small area.

We can safely 'wet store' the notion that ROVs have been mobilised on Armada 86 05. At present Armada 78 01 & 78 06 are operating in the European North Sea area, each with a heavy duty work class ROV launched through their moonpools. An 'over-the-side' LARS, similar to that depicted in ⬇️

Armada 86 05 has 5½ hrs to run, at present speed, before reaching the #MH370 search area where the first of its AUVs will be launched. Estimated end of passage amended 17NM south of previous. (white dotted path = actual vessel track, dashed path = projected track to end of passage)
Present and projected positions match closely at 1500hrs, 54NM to run at 10kts. ETA at first AUV launch position at approx 2030hrs (UTC) this evening 30th.

If the vessel is to undertake an extended ‘swing’ then additional refrigerated storage isn’t so surprising. Typically, these vessels are at sea for 4 weeks max. But with a port visit being a 10 day round trip, the crew may have agreed to stay out for a longer period.
