The Lonicera (honeysuckle) genus provides larval host support to caterpillars of 37 Lepidopteran species. In addition, the flowers of these vines attract pollinators, their berries feed many species of birds, and their dense growth offers cover and nesting sites for birds and small mammals.

There are multiple nontoxic methods for removing lawn: smothering it with blocking and mulching materials, solarizing it with plastic, letting plants creep over it from planted beds, encouraging the spread of aggressive native plants, letting grass die for lack of water, or simply digging it out.

A good place to start with shrinking the lawn is to decide which areas to reduce first, such as slopes or stretches along heavily-traveled roads. Other options include spots where grass is growing poorly, areas where it is difficult to mow around trees, or parts of the yard hidden from public view.

There are a number of alternatives to a turf lawn: no-mow fescue blends, mini clover, native poverty oatgrass, or native sedges. Another option is to allow native violets to fill in and outcompete the grass, while offering nectar for pollinators and food for caterpillars of fritillary butterflies.

Who would imagine the survival of this low-maintenance native depends on a tiny moth (Tegeticula yuccasella), its sole pollinator? In turn, some of the yucca’s developing seeds feed the moth’s larvae.

Rather than being used as the landscape default, “lawn” can be retained in limited areas for play, footpaths in heavily traveled areas, or as edging for flower beds. The remaining landscape can feature an expanded plant palette to bring ornamental interest and provide critical support for wildlife.
