Queer writer, queer reader, turning my queer rage into queer joy by expressing it through my queer stories.

There is a freedom in taking pride in your work regardless of sales figures. I've seen too many writers produce amazing books then consider them failures if they don't sell as much as they hoped. My work has intrinsic value I'm always proud of.

If a review complains a book is too slow that usually makes me want to read it. I love a sloooow burn. A real one, not merely waiting until chapter two to start blowing shit up. Give me a book where the main plot doesn't kick in till the halfway point after I've really gotten to know the characters.

For quite a while now I'm pretty much only been reading queer authors, and people say, "I couldn't limit myself to only one kind of writing." I'm not. Queer authors write across all genres and provide a wildly diverse set of options.

I encourage folks to read outside their comfort zone, outside their favorite authors and genres, because expanding your reading also expands your enjoyment.

Off the top of my head, I can think of three authors I once loved who I discovered to be hateful, bigoted, or all around toxic, and I simply stopped reading them and turned my attention to other authors. It really is that simple.

Unpopular opinion: I'm kind of over sprayed edges.

As a reader, sometimes it's interesting to look at reviews but honestly I put no real stock in them. I have loved too many books that had a negative response, and I have seen too many things that were initially panned become celebrated classics. I just read whatever looks interesting to me.

It always baffled me when "fans" complained about Barker moving from horror to fantasy and begged for more horror then when he did deliver complained it wasn't horror enough for them. You're either a fan of authors or genres. For me, it's always authors and I'll follow them into any genre.

Anne Rice is my favorite author. I admire her passion and her eccentricity, her refusal to write anything other than what she wanted, ignoring the negative voices who wanted her writing to be less complex and more manageable. She is a great example of forging your own path.

Check out my short story "52/20" in the August edition of @lavenderrising.bsky.social. I'm very proud of this story, which kind of touches on aging in the queer community. onceuponaqueer.com/lavender-ris...

Some stories I write for publication. Others I write as a lark to entertain me and my friends. I take them both equally serious.

I love watching interviews with other authors, read articles and books by other authors, but you should never feel compelled to do it the way anyone else does it, especially if they insist you have to do it the way they do it. Pick and choose and blaze your own trail.

Was I once a big fan of Rowling? Yes. Of Gaiman? Yes. But once they revealed who they really were, I dropped that shit immediately. There's plenty of wonderful work out there. It's not so hard to simply turn away from the work of transhpobes and sexist power abusers, I'm sorry it just isn't.

My @jms-books.com novel Last Night is a tribute to my mother's life and sacrifices as well as my husband's generosity and caring. Some may think it's about death, but really it's all about love.

Happy to announce I've signed the contract for a new novel. It will be called Take Two and involves a gay man who ends up reliving part of his senior year in high school in 1991 and decides he is going to try to change as much as he can!

My @jms-books.com digital short Christmas at Driftwood Beach isn't your typical Christmas story. It's about grief and healing, family and tradition. At its heart is an older queer couple who have been together a line time, something I'd love to see depicted more.

Advice for writers: Just keep writing. Just keep telling your stories. Strive to do your best and get better, but to increase your enjoyment of the process. Sales, reviews, recognition...all nice, but not the point or the goal. Just...keep...writing.

My romance novelette Coming of (Middle) Age was written to celebrate the sixteenth anniversary of @jms-books.com, a publisher that amplifies queer voices. They wanted something that captured the feel of those classic 80s teen movies and I tried hard to deliver.

I never intended for my first 3 @jms-books.com to all take place in the same fictional universe, but I love that it turned out that way. I really enjoyed living with these characters.

I hate the advice that writers should cut anything that doesn't propel the plot. For me, it's those moments that give that story life, make it feel less artificial, give the sense the characters are real people and not just pawns on a chess board. Give me diversions, digressions, and side quests.

If you are interested in a book or movie, I say ignore the reviews good and bad. Experience it and draw your own conclusions without all that noise.

MG Allan @mg-allan.bsky.social · 06/09/2026
I think because all the books I read growing up were devoid of queer characters, writers acting like we simply didn't exist, that is why these days I am really only interested in reading books by queer authors.

The writing industry has its share of bullies who try to discourage you and make you give up. My proudest achievement is that I've never allowed them the power to make me give up.

Here's the thing. Those people who post things like, "Dear writers, if you do XY or Z when promoting your work, I'm never gonna buy your books"... They were never gonna buy your books anyway so fuck em!

I miss when fiction didn’t have to adhere so strictly to reality. When it was more about theme and emotion. I think of Bradbury. His time travel wasn’t remotely realistic but it didn’t matter because it was about what the stories had to say. I feel so much of modern literature has lost that freedom.

The more they try to silence queer voices, the louder we need to get. I'm so grateful to be working with @jms-books.com because they elevate and celebrate queer voices.

I finished my novel Do Over, which is the longest novel I've ever written. Now I will do a polish then submit it to a publisher with my fingers crossed.

A writer should be their own biggest fan. If you aren't writing the exact kind of stuff you love reading then you need to rethink.

Inspiration often comes when you can't find the stories you want. When I read the Stand anthology, I kept thinking that the collection could really use some queer rage. So I did a little fan fiction and wrote the story I felt was missing. archiveofourown.org/works/70760816

It's rough being an author these days. You have to do so much promotion yourself but you'll run into those who complain about how much promotion you do. People say they won't buy from Amazon, but they also don't buy direct from publishers. Luckily I love the writing part. :p

“Uh, hi. This is Samantha Wesley, my niece. I’m taking care of her for ... well, anyway, I’m late for work and I can’t take her with me. I don’t know what to do and I was hoping --” “Breathe, Mr. Wesley. It’s okay,” Ryan said. @jms-books.com "Because of Sam" www.jms-books.com/because-of-s...
Because of Sam by J.D. Walker

In the image are two men and a little girl. Both men have pink-toned white skin. The younger man on the left has honey blond hair that falls into his eyes. He is wearing a dark blue shirt. The older man on the right has short dark blond hair cut in a business style, no-nonsense. He has a serious look on his face and is wearing a dark blue suit with a white shirt and dark blue tie. Both men have neat facial hair. The little girl has very pale, white skin, and long blond hair with a pink hairband. She is wearing a long-sleeved cream dress with horizontal stripes on the sleeves, and is holding a large golden brown teddy bear that is almost the same height as she is. She is between two and three years old.

Just a tribute post to my all time favorite author, @annericeauthor. There will never be another like her, a true one of a kind talent. Her with is extravagant and eccentric, full of passion and philosophy. Complex and almost impossible to categorize. You can't improve on genius.

Might seem strange but my favorite last line of a movie is from Bring it On. Someone askes, "Second place ... how does it feel?" And the reply, "Feels like first." Speaks to when you do work you are proud of, you always feel like a winner.
