its so funny seeing early scenes where they're not fuckin with 21 lol
Henchman 21 from Venture Bros thinking "They don't know how much I wanna pork Doctor Girlfriend." Doctor Girlfriend thinking "Gary's thinking about porking me again." Meanwhile The Monarch is ranting about the guy from DEPECHE MODE.

I'm very frustrated that they told us constantly that he betrayed his oath, as if it's a bad thing, only to then turn around and say that John operating as a rogue green lantern IS good and justified. Not to be toxic but I wouldn't blame someone for thinking Hal was done dirty ultimately.

The show also edges us on WHY we shouldn't trust the guardians. John himself is a product of their machinations, whereas Hal actually was chosen and for most of his career lived up to the ideal of being Green Lantern.

Guy Gardener I'm sorry to say also just comes off very incoherent at the end. I understand he's a shill and is doing what he does for fame, but it's hard to take him seriously when he blinks at the eleventh hour, staring down a guy who is objectively committing crimes against his Corps rules.

In general I feel like the show asks the audience to handwave too many things or glosses over too many fine details and more nuance for the sake of wrapping things up. Frankly the show is begging for more space to breath but the eight episodes and poor structuring of the season hurt it at the end.

The show, imo, doesn't make an effective case for how Noah isn't a threat. Sure, he fights his programming now, but the kid also broke an intergalactic terrorist out of space prison with virtually no help. Don't care if you like the guardians or not, that's pretty fucking dangerous.

He's just on an endless parade of embarrassment and shame for an issue he was the cause of, but he is seemingly not granted any justice for what was done to him. I am definitely in the camp that John was making a massive mistake letting Noah and Kerry essentially get away with murdering a man.

Call me a romantic but I really didn't come out of the show liking John very much. At the end of the day, the ring never chose him, so he looted a dead man's grave for it. In general, the last three episodes really strain the idea that the writers like Hal.

Clarification: Bernadette says she lied, so lol

MFB @mfb467.bsky.social · 24/09/2026
Hal absolutely lied to Bernadette to get John back, and I believe was testing John. On what, I think we'll get that answer in the next episodes. Hal going back, it lines up with him wanting to do good and right what he did wrong in Rushville, but I think he had a double motive.

MFB @mfb467.bsky.social · 24/09/2026
I was thinking he'd check for a mark or scar on his finger from the ring being removed, but that doesn't make much sense. if we follow on from earlier in the season, I bet Hal came up with a bold but reckless plan that ended in the football bleachers to compel John to stay and investigate.

MFB @mfb467.bsky.social · 24/09/2026
Thoughts as I watch Ep 6 again John back in Rushville, I think he picks up immediately after seeing his hand that whoever killed Hal was someone Hal knew and trusted, hence the lack of marks on his hand? The later episodes will hopefully clear this up.

I think the season tries to drive home that John is every bit the failure that he thinks he sees in Hal. He's believed the Guardians propaganda every step of the way, like his parents, and it ruined them and him.

MFB @mfb467.bsky.social · 24/09/2026
John is still rightly mad, but that anger blinds him from seeing the bigger picture. He carries this hatred even ten years later. Killing Zoe was him betraying her trust, and her kindness of saving him (repeatedly, more than likely.)
100
MFB @mfb467.bsky.social · 24/09/2026
On that note, I do believe that Hal never intended for John to get burned alive, because Hal even up to the point where he's got the Manhunter, is still trying to take her in. He says to Sinestro that he doesn't kill, and I believe him that he means it.
100
MFB @mfb467.bsky.social · 24/09/2026
Hal hearing the recorded conversation is him learning all along that John was never chosen for his virtues, only to "fix a mistake." The Guardian says as much when holding the Manhunter's heart. Eliminating Zoe was that, taking the ring from Jordan, and man they couldn't control, was the same.

MFB @mfb467.bsky.social · 24/09/2026
John makes a very pointed reference to Hal not living up to his oath, to the ring, but I think we must remember that John himself never really understood what that meant I think in that moment, he's ultimately telling on himself. John betrayed every personal relationship he built up over the season
100
MFB @mfb467.bsky.social · 24/09/2026
In Episode 5, his rejection of the ring is also him, for the first time, accepting that getting the ring was never going to make him happy. His world, really, comes crashing down when the guardian tells him to just take it. Something in his mind told him, that's not how this was supposed to go.

MFB @mfb467.bsky.social · 24/09/2026
I still need to rewatch Ep 6, but it's in that episode where we see John finally realize how his life was never his, how his desire blinded him from seeing Hal for who he really was. Halogram liked John, Older Hal liked John, but John never accepted that Hal really did care about him.

MFB @mfb467.bsky.social · 24/09/2026
John in 2026 is a shell of a man, somehow more than his younger self. He's got better relationships with his family, but only because the ring is gone, but now he is seen as the guy his parents wasted all their energy on. His brothers keep throwing his special status back in his face, to guilt him.
100
MFB @mfb467.bsky.social · 24/09/2026
He forms a genuine connection to the Manhunter, but he's too blinded by the ring to see how he is a pawn in everyone else's game. She showed him kindness, perhaps in exchange for protection, but that doesn't matter because what he needs most is the ring.
100
MFB @mfb467.bsky.social · 24/09/2026
John fears his parents, their disapproval. He fears letting them down. This is perhaps why he would never have been worthy before Rushville, before the flash forward. Everything was secondary to him. His relationship with his brothers is transactional, what he can do for them.
100
MFB @mfb467.bsky.social · 24/09/2026
He becomes a marine, like his father. He detaches emotion from everything, because that might lead to fear. Hal says it twice, once referring to himself, and again towards John. "Once you lose your parents, there's nothing left to fear."
100
MFB @mfb467.bsky.social · 24/09/2026
I do find John's arc compelling and sad as well. He's a kid who spent his whole life living for other people's dreams, never considering who he was. His parents starved him of culture, and an identity. His brothers sharply point out how no matter what, he never seems "black enough"

MFB @mfb467.bsky.social · 24/09/2026
Hal clearly miscalculated in Ep 5, taking Sinestro's advice too much to heart that he forgot the larger picture of why he was in Rushville. He fell into the machinations of the Guardians, and Sinestro, all to prove he was still worthy. He sees he fucked up and does what he can to help.

MFB @mfb467.bsky.social · 24/09/2026
I think the show's marketing and our cynical interpretations has caused people to approach the show with barbs out, not believing it could be showing us a Hal who indeed is every bit as heroic as he claims.
100
MFB @mfb467.bsky.social · 24/09/2026
John by contrast is driven by what he feels owed to, and seemingly has very little respect for what the ring represents. Episode 6 I think drives home how John misunderstood Hal the whole time, and only in death does he see that he genuinely believed in doing good and being a hero.
100
MFB @mfb467.bsky.social · 24/09/2026
His scene with Sinestro clarifies this, Hal now understands that this was all a plot to replace Hal, Sinestro's protege and shares a rebellious streak. The show is making a point that Hal really is the best person who could've worn the ring, very respectfully.
100
MFB @mfb467.bsky.social · 24/09/2026
He's dedicated his life to living up to the ideal of the Oath, that he's sacrificed his personal connections and having an easy life. He's annoyed at John because he does see him as not worthy, instead being picked seemingly at random by the guardians.
100
MFB @mfb467.bsky.social · 24/09/2026
On first watch it seems more even that both guys are seduced by the power of the ring, but Hal actually isn't, imo. He lives a spartan lifestyle, he has no friends on Earth, he annoys everyone in how dogged he is, but that's because he takes the responsibility of wearing the ring seriously.
100
MFB @mfb467.bsky.social · 24/09/2026
Hal only really understands as John is slavishly beating him that he is too consumed by his desire to get what he feels he's owed, that he's missed the whole point of what the ring is, that he says "you'll never replace me."
100
MFB @mfb467.bsky.social · 24/09/2026
I dunno if people are missing it, but rewatching the first arc of Lanterns, it becomes clear that Hal is indeed training John, at least somewhat, but Sinestro really cemented in his mind what John is, a military man who respects authority to a fault

Beat King's Field 1 (JP) It's a really clunky game and vague to a fault, but the actual gameplay is fine and it has a pretty smooth difficulty curve.
