📖 Bytes of Game Ads 📺 With the loss of the video game rights to Mechwarrior and Battletech games looming over Activision, they looked around for a new mecha game license. They found one in Dreampod 9's anime-inspired Heavy Gear setting, releasing the first of two games in 1997.

A double-page ad for Heavy Gear. "The New Breed of War Machine."

Been a couple of days since a cool Newtype JPN cover, so here's a hella cool one with Dot Hack's BlackRose. 💜 Welcome to The World... ⚡

The cover of Newtype Japan's May 2002 cover with a very nifty illustration of BlackRose posing on it with Welcome to the World in blue text arcing across it.

Sharp X68000 art deco visions of a sunset metropolis of the near-future, as seen through the eyes of those who'd bring us Another World and Flashback Also released onto DOS, PC-9801, Amiga, and ST (Which is where I know it from: 'miggy) 📺: Future Wars/Time Travellers: The Menace, 1989, Delphine

A snap of a gorgeous, sharp pixel rendition of a skyscraper jungle city of steel and glass boxes and art deco 'scrappers, bathed in an orange sunset with gradient shadow. A window washer, the protag, stands dressed in a white jumpsuit on an elevator.

What I like about role-playing games is that they allow you to act out power fantasies that you could never achieve in real life.

Screencap from Elder Scrolls Oblivion. A dialog box says "How long would you like to sleep? 9 Hours."

A glimpse of early 90s' VR on UK tech and video game review show Bad Influence in late 1992 during its first series. Always very cool seeing those immense Virtuality headsets - and the kind of games you could play on them! Going to start hashing in the old TV and ad bits I share with #VideoBytes!

One of look outsides best features is how many of its monsters continuously morph throughout the battle. Ending the battle quickly usually is the best option otherwise things get out of hand.

Counting Petals

A room decorated in various flower themed decorations of every kind and colorm. including a wall paper, various abstract paintings of flowers on the wall, a side table painted with flowers. On top of the side table is a flower vase, a flower lamp, a rabbit holding a flower ceramic statue, a bird sitting on a flower ceramic statue, a tulip ceramic statue and then another painting of flowers. There is a single window in the room and outside looms a group of barely visible police officers in swat gear staring inside. There is a door to the right almost out of frame. A single dandelion taped across it like a lock.

"The pinnacle of 3D shooting on Mega Drive" - that's how this cute-em-up and shoot-em-up was regarded by one publication. And y'know what? The game itself makes a damn good case for itself to be called such. So impressive on a technical level too. 📺: Panorama Cotton, Success, 1994 (Mega Drive RGB)

The title screen for Panorama Cotton with the broom riding protag flying over a leafy forest against the backdrop of an island-studded ocean.

A c;lose up shot of a chibish rendition of Cotton, the red-haired witch, with Silk, her skimpily dressed fairy companion

A shot of the opening level. The gameplay is Space Harrier-ish from behind, with pseudo-sprite scaling. This level is a desert with a oil slick rainbow river flowing zig-zag ahead. Blue flame enemies are roving around.

The cool second level with its checkboard, faux texture-mapped and scaling backgrounds.

Mix some real-time strategy elements with tower defence, then dollop in some War Games and the holo globe from Never Say Never Again influence, and you've got a pretty snazzy game on your hands. 📺: Global Domination, Psygnosis Leeds Studio, 1999 (PS1)
