This traps the airflow into a repeating up-and-down motion. The atmosphere is full of waves, which we can’t normally see. This is what makes wave clouds so interesting, as we can see the peaks of the wave as that is where the cloud forms.

This causes the air to take on the shape of a wave, like what you would see on the water's surface if you dropped a stone in a pool. A layer of more stable air above acts like a lid, preventing the wave from moving higher, while the mountains or terrain stop it from sinking lower.
