In 2024, we planted this woodlot in Kocheka Subcounty, Bukedea District—one of Uganda's hottest areas, where temperatures can average around 30°C during the hottest months and reach close to 39°C in some locations.

Grevillea provides multiple benefits. Farmers can harvest timber for construction, furniture, and sale, creating an additional source of income. The trees also serve as windbreaks and reduce soil erosion. @sizeofwales.bsky.social

Unlike many tree species that compete heavily with crops for sunlight, water, and nutrients, Grevillea has a relatively open canopy and deep root system. This allows farmers to grow crops such as coffee, beans, bananas, and maize alongside the trees.

For farmers with limited land,choosing the right tree species is critical. One tree that has proven its value across the Mount Elgon region is Grevillea(Grevillea robusta). Grevillea has become a preferred choice for farmers seeking to improve their livelihoods while protecting the environment.

In November 2022, we planted our very first tree in the degraded strip of Mount Elgon National Park. Since then, we have successfully restored more than 150 hectares of degraded forest landscape across Masira and Bumugibole sub-counties within the park . @sizeofwales.bsky.social

The exercise generated insights into the status of tree nurseries, confirming that seedlings are healthy and properly managed for distribution. Field visits to farmers also enabled us to assess the survival and performance of planted trees, as well as identify challenges affecting their growth.

Beyond this, he now serves as a Trainer of Trainers, passing on his knowledge and skills to community members. He is a shining example of the impact of capacity-building by METGE. Mr. Waludde also manages his own beekeeping enterprise, where he harvests over 100 kilograms of honey annually.

In addition, with support from Admiral , METGE is restoring 44 hectares of a degraded strip within the park under the TPIL Project. This initiative builds on METGE’s earlier successes, where 108 hectares were already restored in Ganzo and Mayiyi parishes in Bulambuli District.
