cosine and sine are really unfriendly functions to work with, expressing them in terms of exponentials means you can use pure algebra to find new forms of sine/cosine without having a black box to rely on/

Also before you get spooked by complex exponentials, the same index laws you probably learnt at school work here. Remember, i is just the square root of -1, there's no special trickery because its an imaginary unit.

For positive integers, its just r^n and then the binomial theorem for (cos theta + i sin theta), but binomials are undefined for numbers that aren't in the set Z+. The assumption is that it holds for all values of n (which it does), because all values in Z+ work cleanly (which is silly)

There's definitely a link between the powers of i and why the highest possible formula is the quartic. For those wondering, the powers of i have a period of 4, that is i^n = i^(n+4) = i^(n+8) and so on. I haven't got enough space to show how but maybe I'll attach it.
