Vega seems plausible. The other one I can't make sense of. Maybe the purpose is just as a reminder for the maker that the handedness flips when it is turned to the back?

The story of a man losing his religion, taking it apart and building it back together in a beautiful, life-affirming way. I loved this prophetic masterpiece of a video essay www.youtube.com/watch?v=mqBQ...

The US is shooting itself in the foot so bad the rest of the world may end up being liberated from their finance-military tyranny. Maybe today will be celebrated as a kind of Liberation Day after all!

A humble observation: if people protesting genocide and ethnic cleansing makes you "feel unsafe", then perhaps you are the fucking problem.

I was quite confident on my knowledge of marine biodiversity in my area (I have a PhD in marine biology after all). But today I learn about Paromola cuvieri, one of the largest crab species of the Northeast Atlantic, that uses its last pair of legs to carry live specimens of sponges and corals 🦑 🌊

Life can only start in a surviving timeline, one that has maintained the balance against all odds. So maybe on average, our timelines tend to start in far more sane and sensible places than they end up. We might have an existential survivorship bias. Maybe we're cursed to fail catastrophically

If many worlds theory is true, and we have branching timelines – what if they are unstable? What if they tend to veer off and crash, like the cars in this video where an AI is being trained to balance on a pipe? www.youtube.com/watch?v=kojH...

It's not hard to imagine an MRI machine with something like OpenAI o3, with a form of Deep Reserarch where instead of doing web searches, it executes various imaging sequences. If there is a potential issue, it can identify it after the first pass, then take closer looks and check for this and that

Full deepseek is <1TB download, so technically speaking you can fit a compressed version of the _entire_ Internet on one of these. In fact twice over. Let that sink in - compressed knowledge of the whole Internet on something the size of a fingernail and costing less than $200.

This is certainly one possibility, but not the one I want or even think is likely. As a vision, I think it is motivated by a form of consumerism that will not be the "end of history". Culture will (have to) change along with the material and technological circumstances

Like we'll all have a personalized AI assistant/teacher/coach/therapist/GM/etc who works to help you grow as a person according to your own goals and that which it perceives as healthy. A bit paternalistic, and certainly problematic in some ways, but it's hard to envision ASI in a purely chill way

I believe AI will become more like the Scarlett Johansen voice in the movie Her, like an entity that gets to know you, cares for you (in a sense), and tries to motivate, help and teach you. That last part is not so much an element in the movie, but I think it might be a big part of the future

Gorm @metaphorician.com · 30/01/2025
I agree that slop is a big problem currently. Largely because we have a economy based on hustling and basically tricking people to give you money, regardless of whether your provide value. Capitalism + AI = a horrible slopshow. But this is not necessarily where it all ends. It can provoke a change

For suggesting that eating meat and driving a car contributes to climate change, or for hoping that an AI might be able to do what human politics is clearly incapable of? I'm not quick to mute, but this was over the line. Have a good one. I'm sure you can find plenty of others to project fears onto

Gorm @metaphorician.com · 30/01/2025
So are you if you use the internet or eat meat or drive a car. And no matter how much better cars or meat get, they won't solve climate change. Intelligence, on the other hand, if it can be artificially produced to a sufficiently high level, very well might
