Today is Mabon and locally it is Oaks Day, so I represented both by carving a tiny snail 🐌 out of locally sourced petrified wood of the Callixylon tree, an ancestor of the conifer trees. Also finished a runestone with the pictish "tree" symbol out of the same material.

The snail is posed atop an American quarter dollar for scale, fitting just within the coins diameter.

I hold the tiny petrified wooden snail up between my fingers to catch the sunlight shining through its peduncles.

This pictish rune is carved in petrified wood that grew over 360 million years ago. The tree fell into a river, washed out to sea, and sank into the soft anaerobic mud at the bottom of the Late Devonian sea, gradually replaced by silica for me to find it all these eons later.
