I almost never recommend games, but fans of visual novels should check out Hakaba Bunko's "Urban Myth Dissolution Center" (2025), a stupendous achievement by an impossibly small team. Glorious pixel art visuals, a topnotch sound track, fantastic writing and a mind-melting ending. Simply magnificent!

Good article, but two of the five former world hegemons also destroyed themselves: the Hapsburgs disintegrated into Portuguese, Spanish and Austrian empires, while Britain fell back into the semi-periphery in 2020. France and the Netherlands escaped this fate by joining the European Union.

Fun things I've learned while writing a world history of 1945-1973: 1. The US decline didn't begin in the late 1970s, but in the early 1960s. 2. The investment-led model of accumulation (today 40% of the planet) was co-invented by Japan and Sweden.

No. The videogame market in 2005 consisted of 500 million consumers in the core polities (US, EU, Japan) and 500 million consumers everywhere else. Today, it's 1 billion consumers in the core and 4 billion everywhere else. Games should cost a maximum of $40, not $80.
