Concur. As does the Lords policy of letting you bring in a bottle of champagne per person (which only got two of us through to around tea).

Was just thinking about recent vinyl purchases and realised that all of my last 3 are by Swedish artists 🇸🇪 and all at least female-fronted. So apparently those are the two main criteria for something being my kinda thing currently!

Feeling very depressed about the NL/ BE news today. Just feeds into a general sense I feel building around that nobody actually cares about principles, so what's the point? Not giving up my own still, but it feels lonelier.

Second game in a week when I've come out the ground feeling excited about where this Liverpool team are going. Some really really good bits of play, good performances, and a sense of a style being cemented. Still work to do, but so much to look forward to I reckon. 🔴

The one thing I'm absolutely begging @lpoolcityregion.bsky.social to manage when the Wirral buses come under their control next month, is to stop the first 432 after 5pm being a ghost bus. Years of a >50% chance that it doesn't turn up. If they can at least make the timetable true, it's a win.

Tasked with making the playlist for an event, and I'm once again undone by how I haven't learned the name of any songs I've listened to in about 20 years. I know the artist they're by and which album they're on, but can't be sure it's definitely the right track from name alone!

The Rehearsal is one of the most gobsmacking series I've ever seen. Totally out there but total genius. Nathan For You is a gateway drug but if you want to jump in deep, go there. I only know about 3 other people who know who he is, it's the most maddening thing to not be able to talk about it!

Peace and love to all creatures EXCEPT for this particular young seagull who has been hanging out in this exact spot by our back yard and just screaming every morning for the past fortnight.

My favourite thing about this version of Liverpool so far is that I'm excited to watch us play football again. We look sharp and purposeful, full of intent and with players willing to give what's needed. Still early days but can't wait to see what's to come.

Same! Wanted to do the late Maquina set but was having so much fun at Mandy,Indiana I didn't leave early, then figured by the time I'd walked the 25 minutes there it'd be full. Would have taken a chance and not been bothered if it was closer, but that distance is an investment of time & energy.

But oh my goodness, Anna Von Hausswolf. Opening the festival, with straight up one of the best sets I've seen this year. Definitely gonna go and see her when she's in Liverpool in November. Just extraordinary.

What I've seen: Angine de Poitrine proved their substance. What a show. What an audience too, such a good vibe!

I'm at Manchester Psych Fest for the first time. Seen some incredible performances. But the biggest issue is that it's in Manchester, and so all the main venues are a minimum of 15 minutes walk from each other. Which removes the "let's see what's about" vibe I like about festivals.

Iraola just on Sky, big thing I noticed is him saying everyone has a part to play e.g. when Frimpong's/Grav's unique skills will come in. Shouldn't be a big thing, but I got v.frustrated with Slot when he pointedly did the opposite. Must change the team dynamic when you're ALL publicly backed.

I mean, Saturday was definitely a lot of mess. Just was easier to spot a plan within it, which couldn't be said for most of last season.

Julia @messylines.bsky.social · 04/09/2026
When I came out the ground on Saturday, I thought that within it all you could see a direction of travel that Iraola wants us on. Tonight felt like another big step down that path. Still some holes of course, but loads of positive to take from that. Felt much more like us.

🔴⚽ Usually I'd be well up for our game being on a Friday night, but I've spent the entire day in high-alert stress mode and don't think it's exactly the thing that's gonna bring me out of that.

Waiting for the bus home from a gig on Friday, a man also waiting (& has clearly been to same gig) asserted to his mate that mosh pits are "woke nonsense". Now I cannot get out of my head what an odd thing to say this was.

Just watched Timecop for the first time and, yeah, we really are living in the dystopian future the movies of the late 80s/ early 90s were worried about.

Aah, Tim Curry. Always there in loads throughout my childhood, being great and just totally*in* whatever it was he was in. Then it's hard to overstate how important his turn in Rocky Horror was to me as a teenager.

I also remember going back into school the next morning raving about the gig, and her, and being absolutely scoffed at by people who had never seen (& probably never did see) them live, but fully bought into the media narrative about her.

This is great. I remember seeing the White Stripes around 2003 and spending the whole show absolutely entranced by Meg. She had a presence unlike any other drummer I'd seen to that point, quiet but absolutely driving.

How long would you recommend for the Pitti? Turns out that lots of things are closed two of the days we're there so scheduling is a bit trickier than I expected. It's definitely on the list but time dependent.

🇮🇹 Looking for Florence recommendations! Obviously booking all the bit hitters (Uffizi, Accademia, Opera del Duomo etc) but does anyone have a shout for a little masterpiece we might rush past and miss?

Finally saw The Odyssey. Late enough to avoid participating in "the discourse" but I now know which opinions were correct & which were terrible. And realise that lots of the terrible ones didn't actually want the film to be the story of The Odyssey.

Very troubled by the idea of Bezos being anywhere near the club. "Fuck Bezos" has been a principle in our house for years now, no paid Amazon anywhere near it. The fact that he's gonna profit off my ticket money infuriates me.

Yeah exactly my thoughts, their bad story could just be a case of just bad luck/not enough research. I had exactly the same experience as you in Memphis, which people in nearby towns had warned up was a hellhole and was in fact mostly fine.

Friends of mine went there on honeymoon a couple of years ago. Said it was fab exploring in the daytime, but around where they were staying was very sketchy at night. That could just be in a particular neighbourhood (no idea what part it was).

I've been missing writing more & more over the last few motnhs. My old website is dead (😭), & I've been afraid to start somewhere new because I feel like it'll imply a commitment I'm not sure I can give. But the more I think about it, the more taking a shot is needed.

Finally booked my tickets to see The Odyssey, on...two weeks tomorrow. Because that's the first date our nearest IMAX had two seats together for. Quite popular this one, isn't it!

The crappy, generic thing is important. It's much easier to walk/scroll past flyers when they all look the same. People don't take in all the words, but the overall impression. Your event doesn't stand out, it's just "one of those". Another way everyone loses. End rant. Screw AI. (/3)
120
Julia @messylines.bsky.social · 03/08/2026
Yes, even if it's a "community event". You know what's better for the community? Not using the water consumption your crappy, generic flyer took. Are people really expecting something "professional" of you, or would you actually be better off showing some personality by going DIY? (/2)

Julia @messylines.bsky.social · 03/08/2026
I've exceeded my saturation point with AI flyers. This month they've turned up everywhere around my area. I'm so sick of the sight of them that I worry they might *actually* make my eyes bleed. Taking a hard line on refusing to attend anything that's advertised with one. (/1)

Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds: brilliant of course, but unbelievable highlight that ACTUAL KYLIE MINOGUE turned up for a duet of Where The Wild Roses Grow! Stunning day in Brighton!

Just finished The Bear, which was a remarkable show from start to finish. Since S1 & through all the hype, it's stayed true to itself. Rounded characters with real, messy lives that really resonated. Never afraid to take stylistic risks. Could have you laughing & crying in the same 40 mins.

That's what I'm saying about the bubble effect in action that I'm saying, in my circles he's very well known. He also gets on 6music regularly and gets invited to royal weddings (which 🤨 but whatever) so I assumed he'd be more widespread!

Julia @messylines.bsky.social · 28/07/2026
I live in more of a bubble than I realised. Talking to colleagues (my age-ish) about how I'm seeing Nick Cave this weekend, who I'd think of as well-known. Only one had even heard of him. When I mentioned Red Right Hand they knew it was the 'viral' track, were shocked when I said it was from 1994.

Have now listened to Charli XCX's new album a few times. I think it's a very good album by a very good artist. Not flawless but very absorbing, and packs an awful lot of thoughts into its short run time.

My summer of live music has been amazing (with lots still to come!) but very heavy focused 🤘. So today's postal drop balances that out - one of my favourite song collections on lovely shiny vinyl for the first time together!

Julia @messylines.bsky.social · 24/07/2026
Yes, I think that as we all realise how much bands need our financial support through merch and sales, a CD is not only a way to share their music but also a good price compromise if you can't afford to drop £30 on a new vinyl/ t-shirt at every gig.
020
Julia @messylines.bsky.social · 24/07/2026
I wonder if the rise of the in-store contributes too. I'd stopped buying CDs before these picked up, but CD tickets are half (or less) of vinyl. If there's two of us going, it makes sense to mix up formats. And if it's a new album promo & I don't know the material, CD price feels like a safer bet.

SO many ppl in Warsaw on Saturday were fellow UK residents going to the gig. Most had the same reason as us: it was cheaper & easier to get to the Warsaw date than the London one. Feels indicative of something rotten that nobody who doesn't already live in the capital can access an event there.
000
Julia @messylines.bsky.social · 22/07/2026
No, wanted to but we ran out of time, the weather wasn't great so it wasn't a priority. Another day in the city would have been perfect, would love to come back.

Yep same. Done Krakow 3 times and a couple of days in Warsaw on this trip, it was fine but Gdansk has by far the best vibe.

Everyone I know who had been there had told me that Gdansk 🇵🇱 was great. And they were right! Beautiful, with loads of interesting history. Wish we were staying an extra day.
