Relationships mean the most when the other person can tell you were paying attention. So it's important to show you remember the important things! The detail you bring back up. The follow-up question. The thing you ask about again months later.

The research separates two things we usually think of as the same: • Felt knowing (I know you) • Feeling known (you know me) Across all seven studies, feeling known was the stronger predictor of satisfaction.

7 studies, 2,036 people: what predicts relationship satisfaction isn't how well you know the other person. It's how well they feel known by you. 🧵

The effect is even stronger with weaker ties. The person you're most nervous to message is usually the one who'll be most delighted you did. This is why Mesh surfaces people you've drifted from, not just the ones already in your group chat.

People massively underestimate how much others appreciate being reached out to. "Across all experiments, those who initiated the communication significantly underestimated the extent to which recipients would appreciate the act of reaching out."

After each meeting, add notes. Set Reconnect cadences on the Groups you need to stay in touch with. Get notified when people change jobs or are in the news. Outreach stops being something you remember to do. It just happens.

It's 2:55pm. Your exec has a call in five minutes with someone they met once, two years ago. You need to brief them, right now. Contact info is in Gmail. The LinkedIn connection is under a different name. The last conversation is buried in WhatsApp.

If you're an executive assistant or chief of staff, managing your calendar is the easy part. Knowing who's on the calendar is much harder. 🧵
A person works on a laptop, viewing a digital calendar with scheduled events, seated at a wooden table by a window.

A causal test of the strength of weak ties

The effect varied by industry. In digital industries, weaker ties helped more. In traditional industries, slightly stronger ties performed better. But across the board, the extremes underperformed the middle.
100
Mesh @meshhq.bsky.social · 06/08/2026
Moderately weak ties—people you know but don't talk to often—had the highest impact. They're familiar enough to trust and reach out to, but distant enough to have access to different information and opportunities than the people you see every day.

Mesh @meshhq.bsky.social · 06/08/2026
The experiment tracked 2 billion new connections and 600,000 new jobs. Researchers varied how often LinkedIn suggested weak versus strong ties. Result: an inverted U-shaped curve. Ties that were too weak provided diminishing returns. Ties that were too strong didn't help much either.

A 2022 study tested weak ties theory on 20 million LinkedIn users over five years. The finding: your weakest connections aren't always most valuable. Neither are your strongest. It's the moderately weak ties that create the most job mobility. 🧵⤵️

When in doubt, write it down. • Notes live on the person, not in a pile. • Don't self-edit. You never know which detail matters. • Write down what someone needs help with. You never know when you might be able to.

We're all wildly overconfident about what we'll remember from a conversation a month later. The favorite dish. The podcast. The thing they were nervous about. In the moment it's unforgettable. Four weeks later, it's gone. This is why notes are so central to Mesh 🧵

The problem is we don't naturally track this. We remember the big conversations. The important meetings. But we lose track of the wider network—the people we used to see regularly who quietly drifted away.

We tend to focus on going deeper with the people closest to us. This study suggests breadth matters just as much. The number of people you interact with on a given day. Read the full study at pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/24769739/

Social Interactions and Well-Being: The Surprising Power of Weak Ties - PubMed
Although we interact with a wide network of people on a daily basis, the social psychology literature has primarily focused on interactions with close friends and family. Casual acquaintances drove this effect more than deep friendships. The brief coffee. The hallway conversation. The person you don't know well but happened to run into. More interactions, even light ones, predicted better mood and stronger sense of connection.

❸ Do your research. The best conversations happen when someone's prepared. A one-minute review before a coffee changes the whole thing. ❹ Show up. The more you show up for people, the more good tends to find its way back. The full method: library.me.sh/knowledge-b...

Cleaning up Contacts

Let auto-merge handle duplicates. In Settings, Mesh's resolver merges profiles only when it's highly confident they're the same person. Anything it's unsure about, it leaves for you. And if a whole integration is noise—Twitter, old iOS Contacts—you can drop the entire source in Settings.

Mesh @meshhq.bsky.social · 22/07/2026
Archive the people you've drifted from. Search by recency—everyone you haven't seen since before 2020—then select the whole list and archive it in one pass. Years of dormant contacts, gone in a few seconds.

And Mesh works through AI tools like ChatGPT, Claude, Openclaw, and Hermes via our MCP and mesh-cli, making it the perfect home for your people and relationships. Ask "who should I see in NYC?" and get back context, not a filtered list. The people who matter, when it matters.

Mesh looks at your history with each person. Why you connected to begin with. When you last spoke. What you talked about that mattered. It surfaces the people it makes sense to reach out to, and why they came to mind—something LinkedIn or your Contacts app can't do.

Mesh @meshhq.bsky.social · 20/07/2026
The same search means something different depending on what matters to you: • Planning a visit → who you'd genuinely enjoy seeing • Exploring a move → who could help you feel at home • Just passing through → who you've been meaning to catch up with Context changes everything.

Mesh @meshhq.bsky.social · 20/07/2026
Most tools stop at the search result. They hand you 52 names that match your filter, then leave you to remember who each person is, why you connected, and whether it makes sense to reconnect.
