I used to find Texas amusing but after 50+ years living here ... I no longer do.

I see two strategies repeatedly that I like/have adopted: (1) Always speak truth regardless of how it is received, and (2) one step at a time, keep moving the good forward. My personal mantra has long been that There are always going to be surprises, and some of them will be good. 🎂

I sort of do what you're suggesting because sitting still doesn't work well for me. Also it helps when I look at plants/trees I try to remember their name(s) and say them out loud. That acts much like a camera shutting opening/closing used to do for me.

That's always been my favorite BB town. Am not a fan of Marfa for various reasons and Alpine is kind of 'meh' except for the great plant nursery on the U campus (may not still be there...). Anyway. Nice to hear someone else appreciates Marathon!

LOVE the Gage. First stayed there w/a Sierra Club (Ft. Worth) trip to BB and fell in love with it...just want to stay in the old section. The big beds w/enough space underneath for the saddles ... And, always great food. :)

You know of course that research has found that depressed people are more realistic than the [lucky!] non-depressed folks ... not sure what that buys us, though, since Reality seems to so often suck?

Pretty sure there's a group all ready to do just that ... costumes optional?

I also use raw collards in salads sometimes, also in thin strips, because I like the crunch and the little bit of bitterness. There was an award-winning cook in South Carolina a few years back who had created collards kimchi ... I bet it was great!

Lightly steamed collard strips w/some red pepper flakes combined with pickled red onions and peanut butter!!!! make an incredible sandwich. Not my idea but I've eaten this many times and it is DELICIOUS. (Sorry, can't remember where I got the recipe...)

I would have LOVED to retire somewhere with good mass transit, having lived 50+ years in Texas; but nowhere is affordable. I'm 78 and still OK to drive but it's more terrifying now and my reflexes aren't as quick; I can feel the changes. What to do?

Trivia note (from a U.S. Special Forces medic on herbal remedies): Lantana leaves, crushed, lightly moistened, will heal even deep cuts overnight: no redness/infection, completely healed. It's true. I've read that lantana is, however, poisonous to eat but this topical use is real and positive.

I never made 3-figures and worked 45+ years as a 'support professional' mostly corporate. I like to think, only mildly bitterly, that I helped create monies for the millions of people who've retired comfortably on government pensions.

As I think you know -- Texas isn't so much a Republican state as a non-voting state. Or has been until fairly recently. Let's check the results of the midterms upcoming and perhaps revise our opinion.

Living in Texas most of my adult life I've had many occasions to try to sort of gently explain why I'm an atheist. For many years, esp. when I worked full-time I'd spend at least part of Sunday/trad. Day of Worship by going out into where Spirit actually resides.

I'm remembering the numerous occasions where confusion reigned and I ... told the babies what Good Dogs they were. And, others, likewise. I don't know; in retrospect, maybe it set those babies on the path to being excellent pet guardians. :)

I look forward to George's posts every day. Am personally partial to Orange Boys, usually Stripey, and always perfect. Thanks to you, George's caretaker/agent extraordinaire/wrangler and of course, to George for making my days in this chaotic scary world much better.

Should you want or need to 'feel' more about the world we're currently living in? I suggest Peter Gabriel's 'Signal to Noise' w/Nusrat. Usually I listen to it on repeat when I start to feel too numb. :) www.youtube.com/watch?v=B5Kc...

Taking good care of pets now is only affordable by the financially 'comfortable'. The rest of us can get by some by using discounted vaccination clinics, sometimes spay&neuter, but for actual illness, accident, dental care?? Ain't no way ....

And I, living in the giant boiler that is south Central Texas ... am so happy/excited/relieved that our high temps this week have fallen to the mid- upper 80s. Nights in the low 70s. We have ~ 7 months of hot weather here and I hate it. Envious of living upnorth but too old to go now. :)

My Lucinda died 9 years ago and not a day goes by that I don't still miss her. I tried to adopt another dog & couldn't. Now I'm in an apt. and it's too hot/I'm too old to walk a dog in the 107 d heat so I have 2 CATS! I still Miss Lucinda every day. I am so sorry for your loss of Quest.

Chewy has a reputation for kindness and the kind of customer service most of us can only dream of. It's well-deserved and I wish more companies would pay attention ... And, I'm so sorry for your loss of Loki. Am grateful for Chewy's stepping up as they do. Take care of yourself.

We can't. To say otherwise is not only disrespectful but cruel -- millions of people cannot work/intend/pray their way out of systemic issues as you note. Kinda like praying; you can do things to make yourself feel better, but that's often their limit.

My Percy managed to 'set up' at least 3 feeding sources in the apts. + supplementing w/birds and lizards. He's been an indoor cat now for a year, plenty of food, but 2X a day + treats, and he will literally jump onto the counter when I'm prepping my food...

I have an adult cat just like the one that jumped UP into the bowl; he was left behind by an eviction & on his own for some time. I think he's terrified he'll miss the chance to get something to eat & it's really sad to see the lengths he'll go to to make sure he isn't missed anything.

It's too bad that we can't just auto-replace any photo of Trump's face/head w/one of those generic emoji blank faces... so very tired of even looking at him. I no longer read anything he says.

Life vs. Death -- the Grind is exactly how it can be visualized: a harsh, impersonal destruction of lives. Life is its opposite in all ways and holding hands, dancing, spending time (of which we have so little, really, as humans) being joyful.

Is it inspiring you to write Judith's book in the Saint of Steel series????? She did set out into the desert having somehow integrated herself w/a very powerful demon??? Can't wait till you resolve all the questions around her and the Saints etc.!!!

9:55, waiting for COSTCO to open; told an older man also waiting that my fallback for when I run out of $ as an elderly had been Medicaid but they've cut it. Another man immediately started on Medicare for All, saying how it would be a disaster. Longest 5 min in my recent timeline.

This is the time in the election cycle, esp. this crazy one, to put our heads down, prepare to do the work of voting, do the work, go back to work, school, home -- wait for the results.

My adult daughter (51 yo) and I both are forgetful; she has ADHD and I have ... among other things, Aging. Yesterday I took my evening meds 1st thing in the morning. I worry about my daughter and her ADHD as she gets older, but hopefully there's a plateau?

Meredith Sterling @mersterling.bsky.social · 25/09/2026
Well, something like 77 million American people voted for him this past election (assuming it wasn't rigged by Trump&MAGA), so it's hard to make a case unless you qualify 'the American People' to 'a significant minority of the American People'?

UPDATE: I can't find where I found the 750K figure so don't take it as gospel. There are multiple reports from larger counties like Bexar (45,000) 40K to Collin County 32K to Travis. Records sent were created as far back as Oct 2025.

Meredith Sterling @mersterling.bsky.social · 25/09/2026
Well, I think 'losing' 750K voter registrations in Texas is a pretty good start to interfering w/that state's elections? I have zero belief that it's anything but intentional. Up to each county now to try to input thousands of new voter info days before Early voting starts...

I believe in compassion toward all; but there are also some truly evil people in the world, intentionally so, and compassion doesn't assume you let them hurt others. And, punishment doesn't teach anything but fear but sometimes it's necessary for removing the reach of harm ... Here we are.

Isn't it in Chapter 10 of the Project 2025 Manual that the 'state' that controls the food supply controls the populace? I think I saw that referenced somewhere and current events whiff of Stephen Miller. Thanks, SM, for my recent salmonella infection during which I lost 6 lbs.!!!

All animal companions should be appropriately trained. I've not experienced problems w/other ESAs or Therapy Animals in public, but even with the best training, they're still often no more adult than human toddlers. One does one's best most of the time in this, I think ...

I have 2 Emotional Support cats -- my PCP wrote a letter explaining why I needed them which allowed me to waive the pet deposit at my apartment ($600) + monthly pet rent ($40ea/month). This isn't the same category as a pet and it is legally sustained, i.e., my apt. mgt. had to accept it/consequences

Meredith Sterling @mersterling.bsky.social · 24/09/2026
Emotional Support Animals is a designation with very different training requirements (none, actually, unless you want/need certification), so very different from a Therapy Animal which must be certified to use the designation and trained for its job...

Totally not on subject; but I went on an exploratory driving trip of the Midwest 2025 to look for somewhere to move, cooler than south Central TX. No luck there, but I remember Iowa being so beautiful; I had no idea and don't remember ever seeing it discussed. What a wonderful state.

Will never forget that ~ 50 years ago, a male gynecologist told me prior to cervical punch biopsy that, "You might feel a little pinch...". I also will never forget how badly I wanted him to feel that little pinch somewhere in the region of his dick.

I'm 78 years old so, no, I didn't miss 1970. The extent of corporate & oligarchic takeover of our government has exploded since then. I'm willing to still have hope that The People will push back hard enough to have an effect in today's world.

Meredith Sterling @mersterling.bsky.social · 22/09/2026
At this point and from the viewpoint of my 78 years on this planet: the corporations, large and small, have pretty much complete control over us. I don't see how that can or will be changed, frankly. I hope I'm wrong but time's running out for all of us.
