Moms will lose ~1.2 their body mass converting their fat to milk so calves have the energy to migrate to the feeding grounds with Mom; they need to have the blubber for the colder water; and being bigger means less likelihood of successful attacks by mammal-hunting Orca in the feeding grounds.
