okay i've changed my mind i need to see You Can See Everything www.theverge.com/policy/10146...
screenshot from the linked article

Early in the film, Fielder asks Holmes if she has chosen him to tell the story because he isn’t a science journalist, and it’ll be easier to get one over on him. She says she sees it as a human story. She feels she has been misunderstood. She isn’t the fraudster people — like me, I suppose — made her out to be. She wasn’t lying to anyone. She really believed in her invention. As she says this, she is wide-eyed, making eye contact with Fielder. Her face is placid, even peaceful. She appears to be fully convinced. [At one point, she insists she’s never told a lie at all, not once in her life.]

i used to just have the widget stack at the top and the two rows of apps beneath it but slowly my home screen is becoming more and more crowded and i hate it but also i refuse to use two pages of apps!! it’s home screen and app library and that’s it!!!
screenshot of my iPhone home screen.

the wallpaper is Olivia Rodrigo in a white dress and cowboy boots standing on a stone staircase with trees in the background.

at the top of the screen is a wide widget stack currently showing the weather (13°C in Christchurch, NZ)

below the widget stack is two rows of app icons: The Verge, Mastodon, Blacksky, Google Maps, Mi Home, AllTrails, Apple Health, Google Keep.

there’s a space in the middle so you can see Olivia clearly, and on the left is last.fm and Voice Memos, and on the right is I Am Sober and fortnite.gg

in the dock i have Message, Jewelcase, Apple Podcasts, and Settings

The Tech Bubble

In 1989, working on a NeXT computer, British computer scientist Tim Berners-Lee invented something he called the World Wide Web: a potentially infinite array of linked documents on the internet. He was working at CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research, and designed the web for global CERN scientists to access one another's research.

It was such a good idea that on April 30, 1993, CERN released the web to the general global public. [A gold rush resulted. Investors poured money into anything with "com" in their names-whether or not they had profit or even a business plan.] Between 1995 and 2000, the tech-heavy Nasdaq index rose from 1,000 to over 5,000. Everyone was going to be rich.

Killing the Newton

Of all the victims of the Quadrant overhaul, the Newton upset Apple's faithful fans the most. By 1997, it had nearly become the technological marvel Apple had always intended. The handwriting worked, the features were solid, and a cult of superfans had arisen. With the MessagePad 2000, the Newton was finally breaking even.

For months, Jobs was torn. He shut down the Newton, Inc. subsidiary and brought the project back to Apple while he pondered-but soon thereafter, he killed it altogether.

The Newton's fans swiftly took to the press and the internet to express their outrage. About 75 people gathered at Infinite Loop to stage a rally. It happened to be the first day of work for Apple's new worldwide operations head, Tim Cook.

lengthening the night, pushing back the dawn

Neocloud CoreWeave’s bonds are distressed, and so am I. The company’s unsecured debt due in 2032 is now trading below 80 cents on the dollar, Bloomberg reports. “Yikes” is right, Elon — if CoreWeave crumbles, other debt-laden neoclouds might be in trouble, too. CoreWeave is in many ways the poster child of the current AI buildout, which may have disastrous consequences if things don’t go as planned.

Could it also be that we are all tired of hearing day in and day out about these tech overlords pushing their agendas on us and we reaping the consequences? Idk when the news sucks maybe we want to be distracted, not constantly reminded of our current situation.

hey, the powerbook what?
photo of a page from Apple: The First 50 Years by David Pogue

PowerBook Duo

The wildest, weirdest laptop Apple ever brought to market, though, was the PowerBook Duo, in October 1992.
The idea was ultimate portability-three pounds lighter than the regular PowerBooks-by leaving behind everything but the bare minimum. No floppy drive, very few jacks. The screen was only 9 inches diagonal, the trackball was more of a trackmarble, and the keyboard keys were about 88 percent of the standard size. "These are not computers for the ham-handed, noted Macworld.

But the name Duo hinted at the coolest part. Once you were back at your desk, small and light" didn't matter. You could slide the closed laptop like a VHS tape into the motorized opening of the Duo Dock, a sort of laptop garage. It connected you to the rest of your computer system: big color screen, floppy drive, full-size keyboard, real mouse, full set of connectors, expansion slots, optional second hard drive, more video memory. Now you had yourself a full-blown desktop system.

it’s honestly a miracle that we even have computers at all
photo of a page from Apple: The First 50 Years

Pencil Test

At the 1988 SIGGRAPH computer graphics conference, Apple played a three-minute video called "Pencil Test." It was a charming, wordless comedy created by the Advanced Technology Group (ATG). In it, the pencil in the MacPaint tool palette comes to life, jumps off the screen into the 3D real world, explores other items on the desk, and then tries to return to the Mac's screen.

Pixar, the 3D animation studio, had already made a few simple computer-generated 3D movies (and Steve Jobs was already its majority shareholder). But Pixar used specialty computers that cost hundreds of thousands of dollars. "Pencil Test" was created entirely on Mac Il's.

Standard video creates the illusion of motion by flashing 30 pictures a second before your eyes. It took 18 MB of memory to hold a single frame of "Pencil Test," which is more memory than any Mac on earth had -so the ATG team was forced to render each frame one horizontal strip at a time, and then digitally stitch the strips together.

Even then, the Mac Il required 40 minutes to compute each frame of video. At that rate, the movie's 500 frames would require over three months to render-too long to finish in time for the conference. So the ATG team wrote custom software that could distribute the rendering work among 28 connected Mac Il's. "We collected a bunch of machines from other groups, and a bunch of machines from our group, says ATG engineer Al Kossow, "and then brought in our machines from home. And we stacked them up three high."

The video blew people's minds at the conference, and lives on YouTube to this day. Attentive viewers may notice a few familiar names in the closing credits: Andrew Stanton (future director of Finding Nemo and WALL-E), Galyn Susman (future producer of Ratatouille), John Lasseter (future Pixar CEO), and Nancy Tague (future Mrs. Lasseter).

The techification of everything is just silly. We don’t need smart homes at all. Fancy toys to distract us from the fact that buying a real home is completely unattainable.

This is a tech website, what do you expect? Technically, we don't need smartphones, tablets, $300+ notebooks, $60000+ electric cars (or even electric cars at all), and 99% of the other stuff reported on The Verge and various other tech websites.

Maybe, just maybe, people want to escape reality a bit and not be virtue signaled for wanting a smart lock so their door will unlock easier while handling groceries and a toddler or for a smart thermostat so they can make sure their nursery is comfortable for their toddler or that their pipes don't burst while taking a short, needed vacation during the winter.

this plastic guard that protects the suspension on the left side of the front wheel on my scooter got a crack in it where the screw holds it in and kept falling off so i dug out this shelving bracket and used it as a washer lol since i don’t have any spare. it seems to do the trick!
photo of the front wheel on my scooter. the plastic guard protecting the suspension on the left side has been secured with its original screw and a bare stainless steel L-shaped bracket between the screw and the guard, and the extra length has been bent back close to the guard to hopefully avoid getting caught on anything.

#nzpol it's that time again: when we all take the vote compass survey and then argue with the result it gives us votecompass.1news.co.nz
my Vote Compass 2026 New Zealand General Election alignment chart

it has Te Pāti Māori positioned as the most economically and socially left, just above the New Zealand Green Party in both (which i think is flatly wrong, they should switch places), and below them both in socially progressive is me somehow but i'm very slightly socially left than the Greens.

Labour and TOP are not close enough to the centre and ACT and NZF are not close enough to the right.

National should probably be further down and to the right but it also has no ideas of its own right now so who knows.
