Petite baisse de moral ce soir, entre les actus nationales, les actus persos, cette putain de canicule qui n'en finis plus... Des bisous tout le monde. Ça ira mieux demain (peut-être) On verra... Prenez soin de vous et des vôtres... ❤️

Matsumoto Castle is one of the oldest and most beautiful castles in Japan | tom__quan Location: Nagano Perfecture, Japan
This dramatic night photograph by photographer tom__quan captures Matsumoto Castle (Matsumoto-jō), located in Nagano Prefecture, standing illuminated against a deep, star-dusted night sky. The composition emphasizes the historic fortress's striking black-and-white architecture, commonly known as the "Crow Castle" (Karasu-jō) due to its dark wainscoting and imposing silhouette.

The multi-tiered main keep (tenshu) rises from a massive stone foundation, its intricate white plaster walls and dark roof gables crisply lit against the surrounding darkness. A full moon glows brightly in the upper right quadrant of the sky, casting a cool, celestial light over the scene.

The entire structure, along with the moon and starry sky, is mirrored with extraordinary symmetry in the calm, glass-like waters of the surrounding moat below. This inverted reflection doubles the grand scale of the keep, creating a mesmerizing, nearly surreal study in balance, contrast, and nocturnal stillness that honors one of Japan's premier historic National Treasures.

Wakayama Mulberry Tree Waterfall, Japan
The vertical composition highlights the dramatic contrast between the silky white veils of rushing water and the rugged, dark geological formations of the cliff face, evoking a classic Shinto reverence for nature's pristine sanctuaries.

The upper half of the frame features the crest of the waterfall spilling over a wide, sheer precipice. Utilizing a slow shutter speed, the water is transformed into a delicate curtain of fine, parallel silver threads that glide smoothly over the smooth, dark rock. To the right, a powerful, concentrated column of water shoots out in a bright, energetic plume, adding dynamic asymmetrical balance to the cascade. Lush green forest canopy arches overhead, filtering the daylight and casting a soft, cool glow over the scene.

As the water drops into the lower half of the composition, it crashes over a series of massive, stepped black boulders. These fractured, wet rocks break the falls into smaller, foaming channels that twist gracefully before emptying into a deep, tranquil plunge pool at the bottom. The surface of the water in the immediate foreground is smoothed into a misty white fog, grounding the powerful vertical motion of the falls in an atmosphere of profound stillness and meditative calm.

Hiroshima, Japan.
The composition is dominated by an expansive, fiery canopy of Japanese maples (momiji) in various stages of seasonal transformation. The leaves blaze in brilliant gradients of crimson, burnt orange, and soft peach, forming a dense, lacy ceiling that filters the soft daylight and casts a warm, ethereal glow over the sacred grounds below.

The image is beautifully structured to lead the eye along a stone-paved devotional path that winds deeper into the mountain sanctuary. In the immediate foreground, the entrance to this path is flanked by a pair of heavy, weathered stone lanterns (tōrō), their classic tiered caps dusted lightly with fallen red leaves. From this vantage point, the stone pathway curves gently forward, transitioning into a low, arched stone bridge with simple wooden handrails that crosses a hidden stream or depression in the garden floor. The ground itself is heavily blanketed with a soft mosaic of shed foliage, blurring the boundary between the stone architecture and the surrounding forest.

Nestled quietly into the hillside on the left side of the path is a traditional wooden pavilion or sub-temple building, its dark timber walls and tiled, gabled roof providing a somber, grounding element against the vibrant foliage. The building features an elegant, open-arched window that reveals a glimpse of its shadowed interior, hinting at a space reserved for quiet contemplation. Beyond the bridge, the path disappears into a lush undergrowth of dark green shrubs and manicured mosses, leading toward a stone staircase that climbs higher into the misty, maple-choked valley.

Miyajidake shrine, Japan. Photography by Yama Tomo on Flickr
The image pulls the viewer into the immediate threshold of the sacred ground, emphasizing the profound structural weight and mystery of Shinto ritual spaces. The upper half of the composition is spectacularly dominated by the looming underside of a massive shimenawa (sacred straw rope) tassel—for which this specific shrine is renowned—rendered with such crisp detail that the dense, rough-cut ends of the straw form an immense, sculptural canopy over the entrance.

In the lower foreground, a weathered wooden offertory box (saisenbako) anchors the point of worship, its face boldly carved with traditional kanji characters signifying a sacred offering. Resting quietly on the stone ledge just behind the box is a small glass bottle, a subtle testament to an individual act of modern devotion. Beyond this threshold, the dark sliding doors of the main hall part to reveal a sanctuary interior bathed in a warm, fiery amber glow, creating an intimate, glowing window that contrasts sharply against the shadowed timbers of the outer structure.

Deep within the brilliantly illuminated hall, a pair of golden ceremonial standards shaped like tridents and embellished with fierce, protective faces stand on either side of a central devotional plaque. The intense visual tension between the earthy, shadowed texture of the giant straw rope above and the luminous, golden sanctity of the inner shrine creates an incredibly evocative atmosphere.

Shōren-in, a historic Tendai Buddhist temple nestled in the Higashiyama district of Kyoto, Japan
The composition is a beautiful study in monochrome harmony, emphasizing the interplay between organic nature and traditional Japanese temple architecture. By rendering the scene in black and white, the image strips away distracting colors to focus entirely on texture, light, and the elegant, skeletal lines of the garden's foliage.

The focal point of the composition is a slender, multi-trunked Japanese maple tree standing gracefully in the center of the frame. Its delicate, hand-shaped leaves filter the soft daylight, casting a dappled pattern of highlights and shadows onto the mossy ground below. Behind the tree, the temple's wooden veranda (engawa) stretches horizontally, its repeating wooden balustrades and slatted sliding doors (mairado) providing a rigid, geometric contrast to the organic, winding branches of the maple. The dark, weathered wood of the building adds a sense of ancient permanence to the scene, while the open doorways offer a glimpse into the quiet, shadowed interior of the hall.

In the foreground, low-lying garden shrubs and a patch of soft moss carpet the earth, bordered by a simple stone path on the left that guides the viewer's eye along the perimeter. The upper corners of the frame are subtly anchored by the dark, tiled eaves of a roof on the left and the dense boughs of a mature evergreen on the right, creating a natural vignette that heightens the feeling of stepping into a secluded, sacred sanctuary.

The river, Takaragawa Onsen, Japan. Photography by jeremiah.
The composition presents a dramatic view down a rugged river canyon, transforming the rustic mountain retreat into a pristine, monochrome wonderland. By stripping away color, the image focuses entirely on the extreme, pillowy textures of the heavy accumulation and the stark contrast between the dark, flowing waters and the brilliant white drifts.

The foreground is dominated by massive river boulders that fill the riverbed, each capped with an incredibly thick, smooth layer of freshly fallen snow that looks like sculpted meringue. The dark, ink-like water of the mountain river weaves its way around these soft, bulbous forms, creating a fluid path that draws the eye deeper into the frame. Rising along the steep left bank are the multi-story wooden pavilions of the traditional inn (ryokan), their classic gabled roofs heavily laden with massive blankets of snow that mirror the contours of the rocks below.

Spanning across the river canyon in the midground is a rustic walkway, connecting the different wings of the resort and anchoring the architectural layout of the gorge. Behind the inn, the steep mountain slopes rise dramatically into the background, covered in a dense forest of bare deciduous trees and snow-dusted evergreens that fade softly into a pale, overcast winter sky.

Traditional Torii gate at a Shinto shrine. Japan. Photography by jasohill
The composition is a masterful study in seasonal contrast, where the brilliant, fiery red of the sacred gateway pierces through an otherwise monochrome world of pristine white drifts and dark, snow-dusted foliage. The image beautifully evokes the quiet, spiritual solitude of a Shinto sanctuary in the dead of winter, where the boundary between the mundane and the sacred is rendered soft and still under a thick, purifying blanket of snow.

The central torii gate, built in the classical myōjin style with its gracefully curving upper lintel, carries a heavy cap of freshly fallen snow that mirrors the contours of its wooden architecture. A small rectangular dedication plaque (gakuzuka) rests between its two horizontal crossbeams, quietly marking the entrance to the sacred ground. A single, faint path of footprints winds through the deep, untouched snow, passing directly under the main gate and leading the eye toward a second, smaller red torii visible further back in the distance. This layering of gateways creates a powerful sense of depth, guiding the imagination deeper into the quiet sanctuary.

Rising majestically behind the gateway is a dense grove of towering Japanese cedars (sugi), their dark, textured boughs heavily laden with snow. The sheer scale of these ancient trees dwarfs the gate below, emphasizing the grand, primeval nature of the shrine's natural setting. Thick flakes of snow drift lazily through the air, captured in mid-fall to create a soft, speckled texture across the cool, overcast sky.

Night View at Kamogaiso Beach, located along the rugged San'in Kaigan Coast in Japan. Photography by nki on Flickr.
The composition is a breathtaking study in monochrome tonality, contrasting the sharp, ancient silhouette of the coastal landscape against the fluid, ephemeral dance of the night sky.

The lower half of the frame is anchored by a steep, rocky islet rising dramatically from the mirror-like surface of the sea. Clinging to its craggy summit is a grove of resilient, wind-swept Japanese red pines (akamatsu), their twisted silhouettes standing out sharply against the horizon. The dark, textured stone of the island casts a deep, soft reflection into the glassy, long-exposure water below, grounding the scene in a sense of absolute stillness.

In magnificent contrast, the vast sky above dominates the upper register of the composition. Sweeping, wispy clouds stretch horizontally across the heavens, captured mid-movement with a silk-like softness that suggests a gentle high-altitude wind. Peeking through these atmospheric veils is a brilliant canopy of countless stars, rendered as tiny, crisp points of light that dot the dark void. Through its exceptional control of deep blacks, luminous grays, and natural starlight, the photograph evokes the classical aesthetic of sansui (ink wash landscape painting).,

Cherry blossoms, Japan.
An atmospheric and poetic vertical photograph captures the delicate, fleeting beauty of evening cherry blossoms (yozakura) in Japan. The composition is a masterful study in color contrast and depth of field, filtering the natural world through a lens of quiet, nocturnal introspection. By focusing closely on the soft, pale pink blossoms in the foreground while allowing the background to dissolve into a dreamy abstraction, the image beautifully evokes the bittersweet, transient aesthetic of mono no aware—the path of appreciation for the impermanence of all things.

The foreground is elegantly framed by branches of Somei Yoshino cherry blossoms, their clustered petals catching a faint, cool twilight glow. From the right side, a single, slender twig gracefully curves downward and sweeps back up, suspending a tiny, isolated cluster of blossoms like a delicate calligraphy stroke in mid-air. The cool, deep indigo and twilight-blue tones of the background evoke the quiet hush of dusk, creating a rich, moody canvas that makes the soft whites of the petals feel luminous.

This cool color palette is punctuated by a series of warm, out-of-focus bokeh lights drifting in the center of the frame. Glowing in soft amber, gold, and orange, these orbs of light suggest distant streetlights or paper lanterns reflecting off a wet street or river below, introducing a subtle, human warmth to the otherwise cool, natural scene.

Sakura 2013 (Photography by mrTosh). Japan
A vertical landscape photograph by mrTosh captures the ethereal beauty of the evening cherry blossom season (yozakura) in Japan, dated to 2013. The composition uses strong linear perspective to create a mesmerizing sense of depth, drawing the eye down a long, urban canal lined with concrete embankments. Overhead, a dense, architectural canopy of pale pink cherry blossoms (sakura) blankets the sky, with the foreground branches thrust into a soft, layered focus that beautifully frames the upper register of the scene.

The dark, reflective surface of the water below acts as a mirror, perfectly symmetrying the brilliant illumination of the festive evening lanterns (bonbori) that flank the canal pathways. These small lanterns cast a warm, golden-orange glow that bleeds into the cool, deep blue tones of the twilight water, creating shimmering ribbons of light that stretch toward the distant horizon.

Kyoto, Japan. Photography by Travis Caulfield
The composition captures the ethereal beauty of peak cherry blossom season (sakura) along a tranquil river corridor, beautifully balanceing the rustic textures of traditional stone masonry with the soft, cloud-like masses of illuminated floral canopies. The scene is enveloped in the cool, twilight atmosphere of a mountain valley, which makes the warm, golden glow of the artificial illumination appear even more magical.

The lower register of the frame is dominated by a clear, rushing stream flowing over a low, stepped weir built from rugged, mossy river stones. The water cascades in a smooth, silky veil before breaking into ripples that reflect the brilliant gold and orange lights hidden within the foliage. Rising above the stone banks on either side are spectacular cherry trees in full bloom, their branches bending heavily over the water. The blossoms on the left are illuminated with a deep, dramatic pink hue, while the branches on the right glow in soft shades of ivory and pale white, creating a stunning contrast in color temperature.

Bridging the two banks across the center of the composition is a rustic, dark timber footbridge, its geometric cross-braced railings cast in sharp silhouette against the glowing blossoms. Warm, starburst spotlights are nestled into the structure and the embankments, casting a theatrical, celebratory light that transforms the natural landscape into a brilliant corridor of color. In the background, the dark, densely forested slopes of a mountain rise steeply into the dim evening sky, providing a quiet, shadowy contrast that further emphasizes the vibrant, fleeting splendor of the illuminated blossoms below.

Hand-made Tamari (traditional Japanese string-ball toys) made by a 92yr old. Originally made from old left over parts of kimonos. Hand sewn/embroidered.
A vibrant vertical studio photograph showcases the breathtaking geometric artistry of a handmade temari (traditional Japanese thread ball). Resting against a solid dark background that maximizes its saturated palette, this sphere represents a magnificent pinnacle of Japanese folk craft and textile upcycling. Originally conceived as functional toys wound from the structural scraps and loose threads of discarded silk kimonos, these objects evolved over centuries into highly prized decorative masterworks and auspicious gifts. The fact that this specific piece was hand-embroidered by a 92-year-old artisan infuses the object with an extraordinary sense of living history, where decades of tactile muscle memory manifest as flawless geometric symmetry.

The surface of the ball is a masterclass in division and mathematical precision, split into distinct ornamental zones by interwoven structural bands of emerald green and crisp white thread. The most striking field, dominating the upper right hemisphere, features an incredibly dense, raised honeycomb or tortoiseshell pattern (kikkō) stitched in warm tones of burnt orange and amber silk, which subtly transitions into a pale cream rosette at its center. This highly tactile textured field contrasts beautifully with the adjacent segments on the left and lower portions of the sphere. Here, fine metallic gold threads are meticulously laid down to create radiating fan-shaped vectors and delicate grids over a deep black wrapped core, all split dynamically by a single, fluid banner of bold crimson silk wrapping around the lower equator.

Through this intricate play of color and relief stitching, the photograph honors the enduring spirit of mottainai—the traditional Japanese philosophy of finding deep value and beauty in waste. The sphere ceases to be a mere collection of leftover garment fragments, transforming instead into a self-contained, pocket-sized cosmos of color, line, and devotion.

Hand-made Tamari (traditional Japanese string-ball toys) made by a 92yr old. Originally made from old left over parts of kimonos. Hand sewn/embroidered.
This collection offers a striking visual testament to the boundless geometric variations possible within traditional Japanese textile arts and domestic folk crafts. Originally constructed from salvaged interior threads and fabric scraps of worn kimonos, each ball represents an intricate study in mathematical symmetry, precision stitching, and a harmonious play of light and texture achieved entirely through hand-sewn threads.

The top-left sphere features a bold, crystalline design where prominent white and pale cream bands, neatly outlined with slender yellow thread, converge to form a striking central star burst or floral emblem. This light, architectural framework sharply segments the ball's surface, creating dark triangular pockets filled with layered shades of emerald and mint green that pull the viewer's eye inward. In stark contrast, the top-right ball showcases a dense, highly intricate web of overlapping diamonds (hishi) woven from warm monochromatic tones of crimson, burnt orange, and coral. This interlocking geometric network wraps tightly around a shimmering white base, creating a kaleidoscopic, multifaceted lattice that appears to glow from within.

The bottom half of the grid shifts toward dynamic natural motifs and complex starburst patterns. The bottom-left temari is a spectacular exercise in fluid motion, featuring sweeping, stylized whirlpool or wave spirals. By laying down hundreds of parallel, tightly packed lines of silver-grey and slate-blue thread, the artisan has captured the organic cadence of flowing water with astonishing graphic clarity. Finally, the bottom-right sphere presents an elaborate botanical or celestial arrangement dominated by deep forest green and jade tones. A large, clean five-pointed star forms the primary structural grid, framing a series of smaller, radiating rosettes that mimic multi-petaled chrysanthemums or stars in alternating bands of green and white, completing this stunning quartet of micro-textile art.

Lady in kimono at Heian-jingu shrine, Kyoto, Japan: text and photography by 92san 平安神宮 京都.
A vertical spring landscape photograph captures a classic, highly atmospheric scene at Heian-jingu Shrine in Kyoto, Japan. The composition presents an exquisite study in traditional dress history and seasonal aesthetics, beautifully channeling the romantic, painterly sensibility of early 20th-century shin-hanga prints.

The composition is framed by a spectacular, overarching canopy of sakura (cherry blossom) trees in full bloom. The dense, cloud-like clusters of pale pink and white blossoms dominate the upper half of the frame, their delicate textures catching the bright daylight and casting a soft, filtered light over the sanctuary grounds. In the mid-ground, a simple bamboo and timber railing rests above a base of dark, weathered stones, partitioning the walkway from the shrine's natural landscape.

Standing centrally before the blossoms is a woman viewed from the side, her upper torso and face completely concealed behind a vibrant, crimson-red traditional oil-paper umbrella (wagasa). The brilliant, saturated red of the circular umbrella creates a dramatic focal point that anchors the entire scene. Her formal kimono is a masterclass in elegant textile design, featuring a rich mustard-yellow body that transitions seamlessly into a deep teal-green border along the lower skirt. The garment is adorned with large, boldly dyed and embroidered floral motifs, including a prominent red peony (botan) surrounded by smaller white blossoms and trailing leaves, while the flashes of a bright red inner lining peek through at the hem as she stands on the stone-paved path.

FUDEZUKA Toshihisa(筆塚稔尚 Japanese, b.1957) Shining Water 2 輝く水 2015 etching 21 × 15 cm
A vertical etching titled Shining Water 2 (2015) by contemporary Japanese printmaker Toshihisa Fudezuka offers a minimalist, abstract interpretation of water droplets disturbing a still surface. Measuring 21 by 15 centimeters, the print relies on a powerful contrast between complex geometric linework and vast negative space to capture a fleeting moment of natural movement with absolute precision and graphic elegance.

The composition is anchored on a light, warm cream-colored paper ground that is mostly left unadorned, simulating the expansive calmness of an undisturbed pool of water. The print features fine, dark indigo or purple-black lines etched into the plate, forming a series of concentric circles that represent ripples. These linear ripples are concentrated heavily in the upper-left and upper-center fields, where numerous rings intersect and overlap dynamically to create a dense, vibrating matrix.

Each distinct ripple cluster radiates outward from a tiny, bright vertical line of untouched paper at its epicenter, which mimics a sharp splash or a glint of reflected light. While the upper section evokes the rhythmic patter of rain, a single, isolated ripple cluster floats lower down in the central field. This solitary set of concentric rings stands apart from the dense grouping above, drawing the eye to its clean, geometric symmetry and emphasizing the quiet, meditative stillness that surrounds it. The entire work demonstrates Fudezuka's mastery of the intaglio process, turning a simple natural phenomenon into a sophisticated, highly stylized graphic pattern.
