apple also never really did much with game porting toolkit, it was sort of just a developer utility to help devs port their games over, but imo i think the correct approach would've been to turn the underlying tech into a proton-like compatibility layer for games inside of macos

no matter how good a piece of hardware is, if its market share is just too low to bother putting in the (often but not always) significant effort to port games over developers are just not gonna bother. especially when apple is deprecating things like rosetta 2 next year as well

jules ! @meowfailure.bsky.social · 18/09/2026

oh no that's not what i was getting at cuz the chip improvements are fantastic. but in the 6 years apple silicon's been around the needle hasn't really moved all too much in terms of how accessible games are cuz devs just aren't interested in all the extra work they gotta do to optimize for it sadly

jules ! @meowfailure.bsky.social · 17/09/2026

Wow toby fox should know about this

020

jules ! @meowfailure.bsky.social · 17/09/2026

it sucks though because apple silicon is probably one of the best things to have happened in modern computer history imo, but yeah i just don't really see them getting it for a long while still, possibly ever

jules ! @meowfailure.bsky.social · 17/09/2026

kinda depends on apple not shooting themselves in the foot when it comes to gaming software-wise. they keep thinking they can get gamers to move all their steam stuff over to the app store when that will just never be the case. until they learn that lesson i doubt it'll be taken seriously still

jules ! @meowfailure.bsky.social · 11/09/2026

on the linux side probably best to avoid the latest releases of fedora/ubuntu as well since those have given me issues on some older hardware as well if you're not opposed to it i'd just try ubuntu 24.04 and if that works fine i'd try an equivalent version of fedora from around the same time

if you're going macos i'd prob recommend you use monterey or ventura if you really need better app support. you might get lucky with sonoma too but sequoia is just too heavy for most intel macs of that age sadly, especially if you have a 13-inch with those anemic dual-core cpus

jules ! @meowfailure.bsky.social · 11/09/2026

the way that multi-core performance is approaching m1 pro levels. on a PHONE. genuinely insane what the fuck 😭
