before I call it a night: if twitter goes away, it doesn't matter what mastodon server you land on in a hurry. people can find you by name or handle across the federated network, and you can move your followers/followings to another server later, tomorrow, next month, whatever

I was going to write up a guide to getting started on #Mastodon (and I might yet!) but then I saw this WIRED guide and it basically covers things pretty well. Instance choice being about trust >>> instance choice being about subject matter. t.co/2KcSNk64Nr

hey so i'm spending more time on mastodon (@mendel@hachyderm.io) than here lately. if you want some pointers on how to get started, happy to help! not 100% sold on it yet, but it is a nice change from the Algorithm and the volume here.

local halifax/dartmouth folks: we bought a queen heated mattress pad two winters ago, and then when we moved to Dartmouth we bought a king bed. Sunbeam Selectouch, two controls… anyone want a heated mattress pad for, say, $100, so I don’t have to deal with kijiji?

Sometimes cats will come to believe that their favorite houseplant has secretly been replaced by an identical, different houseplant. It's called the cat grass delusion.

Wow, what terrible service — @krisphq tried to charge my annual renewal at $60, the card had expired, so they immediately switched me to the free level and I can only upgrade at current ($100/year) pricing. Welp, now they’re getting $0, and I’ll never recommend them again.

Billy Bishop was a Canadian WWI flying ace. Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport is named in his honour. And this is his posthumous fursona.

✅ re-caulked leaky basement window (which is unfortunately rotting — this will hold us till spring) ✅ disconnected downspout from (clogged) sewer connection and ran it away from the house and especially away from above mentioned window amateur tip: a tool belt is worth it

occasionally it’s really clear when Hacker News gets hold of something they don’t understand, and this time it is spot color (re Pantone’s pricing model change for Adobe products): news.ycombinator.com/item?id=333699… (tl;dr better to think of Pantone as “specifying ink” than “color”)

I see stuff like this and then I think about Tim's news site (the Halifax Examiner, of which I am a subscriber) and about Gell-Mann amnesia. (There are zero nuclear bombs in the harbour today. But also in our harbour, year round: the navy yard and the navy ammunition depot.) t.co/dtQTb...

Huh, at some point in the last quarter or so, Reddit search gained the ability to search for text in images. (I search for “PagerDuty” every now and again to see what people are talking about and it’s returning posts where the only mention is text in images.) Neat.
