I just wanted to say thank you for sharing this! I also haven't seen an alternative ending that makes more sense to me, and it's really nice to hear that I'm not alone in feeling that way.

I would say the Asa-Anthony addition, while super cute, I think actually works against the reasons why I otherwise liked the bittersweet ending. I would have left it off. Again, thanks for the honest curiosity and attempt to bridge the divide here. It's refreshing!

I also appreciate that in the real world, winning a real gain usually takes real sacrifice, so it feels more...real that there was a true sacrifice here. For reasons too deep to get into here, I also think there's some nice character development and chiastic storytelling to the ending we got.

I can say that none of the S2 fix-it fic endings I read were more satisfying, nor any of the various S3 alt endings I have seen discussed. Each leaves supernatural entities intact and able to meddle, which negates free will.

Interesting question, and I appreciate the curiosity. It's hard to answer without being given a specific hypothetical alternate ending. I am open to (and would have preferred!) such an ending, but I didn't, and still don't, see what specifically that would be that would be better that what we got.
