I am one day late for the feast of St Jerome! may we all find peace and quiet, and by our kindness earn the love of a furry friend who warms our feet while we write our little stories (15th c icon, BM 1994,0501.1; Durer, 1514. NGA 6642)

The Sasanians in Context: Art, History, and Archaeology
Between the third and seventh centuries CE, the Sasanian Empire became one of the most dominant powers in the ancient world—extending geographically from West to Central Asia—and was the last major power in the region before the Arab conquest in the seventh century. In November 2022, in Washington, D.C., the Smithsonian Institution’s National Museum of Asian Art convened “The Sasanians in Context: Art, History, and Archaeology,” a symposium of scholars discussing the latest research on the Sasanian Empire and its rich material culture—from impressive rock reliefs to elaborately designed metal vessels and finely carved seals—and exploring the empire’s legacy beyond its core regions. The symposium underscored how the field has evolved and revealed new areas for future research.Contributors: Antonietta Catanzariti, Anca Dan, Touraj Daryaee, Shervin Farridnejad, Mariachiara Gasparini, Frantz Grenet, Prudence O. I keep thinking about this amazing work of 15th c German art: originally an entire bed, carved with linens and pillows, supporting this unguarded, tender carving of St Anne and the newborn Virgin. Met Cloisters 56.211
A woman lies on a bed, tucked under a brocade blanket, her head in her hand while she reaches out to check the swaddling on a newborn baby girl. All are carved from wood, a devotional effigy from 15th c Germany
